i am planing on running mega squirt on my 97 gsx this winter i was curious if anyone knew how this will work with the new york state inspection and if theres anyway to get around running standalone on an obd 2 and still being able to pass new york state inspections thank you

You don't have to run Megasquirt as a standalone. You can run it as a basic piggyback. Other than that since your car is AWD they will probably just do a sniff test at idle so as long as your car idle's clean you should be ok. I would just wait to install it until after you go to emmisions.

I wouldn't necessarily say MS can be configured as a piggyback... more of an independent fuel controller. Piggybacks just intercept and modify signals to and from the ECU, while MS leaves the ECU out of the loop altogether.

In any case, you're CEL will come on, and if they do an OBDII scan, you're probably screwed.

However, if they just do the sniffer test, there's a possibility that you'll pass as long as MS is properly tuned. It is a powerful system that's fully capable of keeping tailpipe emissions within spec.

That's possible too, just as long as it's tuned well.

If the only criteria for "passing" is the sniffer test, then you have a good chance of passing. I know of several people running full a MSnS setup who pass their state emissions tests. The only catch is that those people live in states where the sniffer test is all that's required. If you have to do the dyno test (unlikely, since you're AWD), if they connect your car to their scanner, or if they do a visual inspection, you may not be so lucky...
