how much power can a stock auto transmission handle. I am thinking of converting my 5 speed to auto. I know I know please do not bash me. I put some where in the area of 350hp down. A 5 speed is such a pain in the butt in traffic.

yhea, you can search that easy but anyway about 300 whp 350 will be on the extreme side especially if stock. Mine is stock and with my mods im around 285 whp and I need to upgrade soon.

Well if you really want to drag the car..... the sway of the DSM forums is to go auto.....

But if I were to guess I would say 300 hp stock. Thats not an extreme but enough to be safe.

From what I have read 300-350 is save. As long as you keep the fluid changed and get an aftermarket tranny cooler. I'm hoping to get around the 300 mark here soon and hope it holds up.

ok so 300 safe means that it will last just like it would or that it will break in a year ?

Every car is different. Do you know the history of the car and how the previous owner/s have treated the car. I would think, and have read on here, several folks have high milage vehicles that are running high boost and their trannys are fine with it.

Most of them recoment getting a shift kit or a new valve body.

I am hoping mine holds up! Im planning on running 20 psi on the 14B.

This car im looking at buying has a shift kit in it already, So that is covered. But I know the main killers of autos are heat and bad torque converters, which cause slippage and more heat. So basically what i was thinking of doing is putting in an upgraded TC, change the fluids, And put a gigantic oil cooler right in front of the radiator. That way it can cool whatever it needs to, but stays at operating temperature with the water because its bad if it get tooo cold. Any suggestions?

what I did was, when I removed the stock side mount intercooler, I just placed the aftermarket B&M trannny cooler and placed it there inline the facotry hoses. I also installed a tranny guage so I can se the temps.

ok so now im going to see if anyone wants to do a full swap for a manul with a act 2600 cltuch. I mean full ecu/ etc. cause dang i want an auto. this nmanual stuff just isnt fun with the traffic im going to have to drive in for the next 2 years.

Man, I tell ya they are something else Iam on my second one and its been less than a year. Your right temp is very important I can tell a difference when its hot it gets lazy doesnt shift as hard as when it at a good temp. So the tranny cooler, temp gauge and good fluid also clean filter is important.

I think 300/350 is a safe number.

Ross ran 9's in his awd auto dsm, with an stock trans with IPT upgrades, that would be the first place to go. 2nd, a bigger trans cooler would be smart, I did't think of it, but like midnightride said, thats a good place to put one, summit sells a trans cooler with an electric fan that you can throw a toggle switch too, and with an added trans temp gauge, you'll know when the temps rise you got to back off a tad LOL.

I have a trans temp gauge in mine, havent realy gotten a chance to use it, but if your going to the track, its your best friend.
