My 420a engine is at 166,xxx miles. Is it a good idea to get that sucker rebuilt now or could I wait it out till 200,000 miles?
I recently had to get the belt replaced cus it busted but, that's the only thing that was wrong with it. Nothing else has had to be replaced or fixed. Plus, I don't drive it hard. I want to save that for after the rebuild and tune it up.
Also, about how much is it to get an engine rebuilt and how long would it normally take?
Sorry if I sound like a complete noob. I don't know shit about the 420a engine.

You don't need to rebuild it until you need to. For example, if you have awkward or low compression, blow smoke, have weird problems, etc. But if it's driving fine, I don't see the point of going through the huge time-and-money-consuming project that an engine rebuild is.

I'm not sure how much it would cost to rebuild. You should wait to have the engine rebuilt. Just like brute said there's no point it wasting the money. You never know it could last untill 200k or more, it is a 4cyl after all.

I agree " If it ain't broke don't fix it." Also If by "tune it up" you mean to build your motor, I would suggest to wait till you have the money to build the motor you really want. Don't go early and cheap out on important parts. If you do have the money now, and you do want to build your motor, then start now, that way you can enjoy the experience.

Roughly how much would it be to get an engine rebuilt? Not that I'm gonna do it now, ### I'm not, but what is a ball park figure on a rebuild?

It all depends on what you need. If you get the block bored and honed and everything, crank polished, etc., just that is like $300 not including parts. New seals and such in the head and a 3-angle is going to be about $300, also not including parts. A full engine gasket set is about $200. You'll need new pistons if you need a bore, so the cheapest new ones are $200. You'll find stuff along the way that you'll want to replace... timing stuff, gaskets that weren't in the set, maybe getting a new clutch plate and getting your flywheel resurfaced, new seals on the tranny, other preventative-type maintenance.

For a good rebuild, with all stock parts, not upgrading anything, doing everything except the machining yourself, and random things, you're probably looking at around $1200-1500.
