Why can't I swap 98 4g63t into 95 GSX easily?

Bought a 95 GSX at the beginning of summer to have something to wrench on this winter. The time has come and I have to put an engine into it. Found one in a salvage yard from a 98 Turbo FWD. The salvage guys tell me its not a direct swap .. said the 95-early 97 interchange and the later 97-99 interchange. everything I know about these models lead me to believe a 7 bolt is a 7 bolt and I should have no problems swapping it into my 95. Can somebody clear this up for me.

The flywheel is different. That's one thing that's different that I know of.

Edit: Other than that I thought they were the same also... However when I looked at my friends 97 GSX compared to my 95 GST he had another sensor on his vc. Not sure if that's a year thing, or a GSX/GST thing...

That dude really doesnt know what he is talking about. All 4g63 motors from 95-99 are the same. Sensors might be relocated on the motor but it shouldnt make a differene. Tranny is the main difference The only different veriation of the motor was the 6-bolt which is pre 95

The CAS is different, 95-96 is different than the 97-99, you would have to swap the plug wires to fire correctly.

From DSMLink:

For the 2G guys, the '95-'96 style Cam Angle Sensor (CAS) sends out a signal that's electrically "inverted" from other DSM cam sensors (1G or '97+ style). When you put a '95 ECU into a car with a non-95 CAS, the ECU ends up swapping the firing order of the injectors. In most cases, this produces very little noticeable difference in drive quality. But we offer the option to invert the CAS signal anyway just in case. You can selectively invert this signal with the DSMLink software as you wish. You will still need to swap your spark wires, though. We can't control spark firing order in the EPROM at crank time. So even with CAS inversion, you still have to swap plug wire 1 with 2 and 3 with 4.

You're basically doing the above by swapping motors onto your ECU instead of swapping ECUs onto your motor (which is what I did with DSMLink).

Other than that...............as stated, all 95-99 4G63s are basically the same. And you'll need to use your tranny, just swap your flywheel and clutch onto the new motor.

News to me... whats the difference between the flywheels?

Thanks for replies.. If I use the Cam Angle Sensor from the 95 engine this will eliminate the need to change the arrangement of the plug wires, Correct?

The CAS on a 95-96 is behind the Intake Camshaft Sprocket.
The CAS on a 97-99 is on the passenger side of the motor connected to the end of the Intake Camshaft, just like that pic showed.
The rotation of the camshaft doesn't change obviously, but where the CAS is located on the shaft makes all of the difference.
The signals are 180* out from one another.
That's the reason everyone with 97-99 engines have to switch plug wires.

This has already been mentioned, but I'll say it one more time.
FWD Flywheel is different from an AWD Flywheel, regardless of being a 7-bolt.
Other than that, you should be good
I think you switch plug wires at the coil pack 2 with 3, and 1 with 4, correct me if I'm wrong guys.
I have the Link, but she's not up and running yet.
Oh, do you have an Eprom ECU in that 95 AWD, :sneaky: ?
