Hi All,
I have the haynes manual and am planning to install a new alternator. Is there a link on this site to detailed instructions with pictures on doing this for the DSM (1997 eclipse GST). Thanks for any help.

i just did my alt. on a 99 eclipse gst dont listen to the manual, take it threw the bottom and leave the water pump in, much easier

Talked with the mitsubishi guy who works on a lot of DSMs from our generation. He said to just move the power steering pump out of the way and bring it out the top. I think I'll do that considering I don't have jack stands to prop up the car.

If you remove the driver side fan it gives you a lot more wrenching room, it's only 4 screws and one connector.

Yes!

I also just drilled a hole in the plastic inner fender well to remove the long Alternator bolt. Easier than trying to remove it, and easily "repaired" by a rubber seal that you can get at any hardware store.

For whatever reason the alternator is way more of a PITA than it should be.

dude theres not that much to it, take off your driver side fan, take it out from the top, replace. had it done within an hour

Job Done. Took 2 hours. No jacks... which was a problem as you guys said. I was able to fit far enough under the car to under the splash guard and take the main bolt holding the alternator on. We stopped half way in to drink some beer so that added some time. We took the power steering pump out of the way and took it out the top because the oil filter was in the way taking it out the bottom. Power steering pump wasn't a problem at all, took about 3 mins to take the bolts off and move out of the way (we just bent the hoses around without disconnecting them.). Funny thing is, the whole process didn't fix the problem I was trying to fix... urgh
