I was wondering what I should do with the pcv valve and the crank case breather, because I installed a magnus smim and don't really want to hook it back up into the intake because I'm tired of shooting a quart of oil on to my exhaust manifold when my dipstick explodes.

My other question is about the gm maft setup ... What's the cheapest I can put that together for?

gm 3" maf - junkyard?
2.5"-3" couplings - x2 (where's the cheapest place)
translator - $200 (or is there anywhere cheaper?)

I'm assuming that I still need the 2g version of the maft, even though I have a 6-bolt w/ a 95 ecu for dsmlink, right?

You can look on ebay or the dsmtuners classifieds for the 3" maf usually no more than 50 bux used, most of the time less. Again if you spot the deals you may find the Maft for under 200 used, or a combo deal where someone is selling the maf and the translator together for a decent price. Yes you still need the 2g version maft for your car.

I was just wondering if there was a site that sold the translator cheaper than 200, but that's not a big deal .. The first question was the big one.

there are many threads on PCV valve setups.. and much speculation as to which is best.. you're really gonna need to do some research on that and decide what you want to do.. many have conflicting ideas about it..

My personal view is to keep the stock setup with a filter or catch in between the breather and the intake. I've never had the blowing dipstick problem but either your dipstick is worn, check the rubber seal, if it's hard and brittle replace it. Also, how old is your PVC? have you tried replacing it? (Use OEM mitsu part, not replacement for these guys) if that doesn't solve your dipstick problem then your engine's worn out, either the turbo or the piston rings.

Like VanIsle said, if your dipsticks exploding you've got some other problems. Your pressurizing your crankcase, either by worn rings or seals, or a faulty PCV valve. Even the OEM pcv valve, doesn't hold up to boost. My brand new one out of the package, blew in it at the dealership to show them, it wouldn't even hold a couple psi. Got another one, same thing. Got another one, same thing.
There's many different fixes and options, you might get flamed for not researching, but I don't like to flame. If it is just your pcv valve not holding up to boost, then you can try either a second inline check valve, or even a second pcv valve.
I'm working on a "cheap" vacuum pump system to eliminate the whole stock setup.
Search around, you'll find your answers.

Good Luck!

I bought a "non-oem" pcv valve, and replaced it. I've done some research, and I've seen the inline filter, or the catch can ... but they didn't really say anything about it releaving crank case pressure.

I just got done with the engine break in on a built 6-bolt about 400 miles ago. I've done a leak down test, and everything was good.

I've rigged up a bolt that's holding my dip stick in place for now. I have dsmlink, and will be switching to a gm-maft setup as soon as a buy some couplings, and the maf. If I just vent the crank case breather, and the pcv valve to the bottom of the car, then will it still count as having air that supposed to be in the engine not in there? I know when the bov releases excess boost, if you vent it to the atmosphere, then your going to run rich between shifts. I know the pcv valve is supposed to close on boost, but if it doesn't hold boost, then what should I do with it. I've seen where guys drill out the center section, but wouldn't that just be like a huge air leak?

The BOV releases air that's going into the combustion chambers. The PCV air never goes inside the combustion chambers. It just cruises around inside the motor.

P.S. Take the bolt off your dipstick. When it blows out, it releases the pressure that isn't supposed to be in there. If the dipstick doesn't pop, you're going to build up more and more pressure, then you're going to have much bigger problems.

It's a well written thread about what doesn't work. Unfortunately, it doesn't help me that much.
