Toronto,
I think for some reason a huge oil leak happened and the car was running low on oil. What is happening now is ther's a constant tapping noise comming from the engine so I suspected the lifters. However when I drained the oil it looked metalic so im guessing now it's one of the main bearings that are shot. The sound originally went away when i reved the engine and could only be heard around 1000-1500 rpm but now it is making a constant very loud noise from 1000rpm + which gets louder as you rev the engine. However strangely the car is running unbelievable strong. What do you recommend i do? or how do i further troubleshoot.

Are you describing a "tick" or a "knock"? With metal shavings I would say knock. With oil starvation you are most likely looking at rod or balance shaft bearings gone. I would suggest you drop the oil pan and take a look inside.

Bingo. Unfortunately it sounds like re-build time. Keep in mind that trashed bearings usually will not affect performance adversely unless the rod gets punted through the block.

Sorry,

Andy

I was about to say that. Dont drive or start it anymore, you dont want to ruin the block. If the knock gets louder as you rev its most likely bad bearings expecially with metal particles in oil.

Ok thats the conclusion i came to also. I will be pulling the engine today but my question is this, can i change the bearing from the bottom of the engine once it is removed? without fully taking the engine apart or do i have to take of the head and remove the pistons etc the work my way to all the bearings. Thanks

Also it sounds as if the knock is comming from the lower timing side of the engine right beside the oil pan. Maybe this will help and it does get louder as the car is reved.

You can do it. But if you scuffed the crankshaft, most likely you would need to take it to the machine shop and use some oversized bearings. if you rebuild it the way you are planning on doing it, you would have the chance to get rod knock again. better go the safe way. Good luck. :thumb:
