91 Turbo GST. Im getting spark and fuel up to the rail. Car turns over fine, not a battery or starter situation. Also while turning over Ill eventually get intake backfire.

Situation probably resulted from this: I was pulling out of driveway and the car was pouring out oil, driving with pretty much no engine mounts shook the oil filter loose. Before I had a chance to turn car off, it died...and will not start. I thought seized engine, but car is turning over. Added oil, checked connections and vacumme lines that possibly shook off. Thanks.

Did you do any other engine work just before this happened? The backfire may be related to either valve or ignition timing, because you could have an open intake valve when the spark goes, thus lighting the fuel and combusting back past the open intake valve into the intake manifold. If your ignition timing is rediculously advanced (so advance that it sparks before the intake valves close) or if your valve timing is rediculously retarded (so retarded that the valve closes after the spark), or a mix of both, you'd end up in this situation. I believe that the 1g ignition timing check is described at vfaq.com. If you jumped several teeth on the timing belt (retarding the intake valves), you can check this by checking the valve timing (also on vfaq.com, I believe).

A car dying with an old timing belt can cause the motor to try to turn backwards and the belt will slip. Check the timing marks on the cam gears.
