Ok I have a 91 tsi awd. I snapped a driver side axle going highway speeds. Anyway I go to mitsu graveyard and get a new axle. For some reason it goes in but sticks out just about a 1/4 inch. I thought that the rear was shot.

So now, I buy a new rear diff. The guy tells me it's off of a 94 and it was a 4 bolt. I was gonna do the conversion. When UPS arrives I realize that it's a 3 bolt. Whatever, I need to get my car running so I just decide to put it in. I put the rear diff in today. It's a lsd 3 bolt, just like my old one that I thought was shot. The passenger side axle with the double splines slides right in perfectly. Now I take the axle I got from mitsu graveyard (the driver side, single spline) and it goes in but not all the way in. It sticks out about a 1/4 again.

Now here's where I'm confused. My old 3 bolt rear said on it "B16 LSD" this new rear I have says "B17 LSD". When I got my new 3 bolt it came with 2 axles in it, but are not useable.

Here's a pic of the axles. The shorter one (bottom) is the one that came in my new rear diff and the top one is the one I got from mitsu graveyard.

So what do you guys think. Do I have an automatic rear or is it an automatic axle I got? Maybe one's a non lsd axle? Or what else could it be?

I just went out and looked at a galant VR4 axle, a Talon 3 bolt auto, and a talon 3 bolt manual, and it looks like you got a auto talon axle.

How do these tow axles compare to your original axle? I have noticed that some companies that make axles for our cars make axles for that are designed for 92-94 cars. Maybe there could be a difference between the 90-91 and 92-92 axles.....not just the 3/4 bolt differences. As you the question of Auto vs. Manual rearend. The only way I have been told that you can tell the ratio differences is too remove the rear cover and could the teeth on the ring gear. A 5-Speed rear will have 43 teeth and an auto will have 39. Hope this helps.

I can't even compare it to my old axle because it broke into peices. I can't even take the cover off because the bolts are so rusted. I tried to take one off and the head just snapped off. I don't really wanna mess with it and then have to drill out all of the bolts.

Can anyone confirm if I have an auto rear or not. Because I don't want to get another axle and put it in if it's an auto rear diff.

The drivers side axle is a bit longer than the passenger side one. Ive never been able to find out what the numbers on the case are. It doesn't seem to really matter though as long as the gear ratio is correct. Personally, Id PB those bolts and tap them a little and try to get them off. You really should try to make sure its a manual differential. Also, the 4 bolt axles are a little bit thicker than the 3 bolt ones, just for reference. You sure you just arent pushing it in there hard enough? Sorry if this made no sense, I'm tired.

Yeah I'm def pushin it in hard enough. I was beating the axle in with a mallet. It would go in and then just stop because it's longer than the axle that came in the rear.
