Ok Check engine light came on today in my 96 gsx. I took it to schuks to run a diagnostic. They could not find a searias 2 port. They told me because my car was biult in 95 that I would not have this port. So what should I do? Do I have to go to the dealer or can it just be hidden? Where is it on the newer cars? Thanks in advance.
One last thing, I just failed emissions.
 
looks like he is stock besides a short shifter. also there is a way to find diagnostic codes on OBD I (On Board Diagnostics) They way to read them is differnt though I am not sure how to do this specific to your car but I will give you a general idea you have to turn the key to the on position and then jump some connectors in the engine bay then the check engine light will have a series of long and short flashes that you count and that is your code. the best way to find out for sure is take it to a shop they will read it for I think like $75.

when i took mine in its underneath the steering wheel, its kind of hidden takes a while to find the first time but its there

Take your car back there and have them look a little harder. It's under the driver's side dash panel, just to the left of the driver's side kick panel of the center console. The port faces straight up and down, not slanted or horizontally like most OBDII ports on domestic cars.

The only way it won't be there is if someone who owned the car prior to you physically relocated it or if it's been tucked further under the plastic dash panels due to an alarm or other wiring accessories getting in the way.

95 is obd II, not obd I. Also, the method you speak of must be for something other than a dsm. I have yet to ever jump any wires on a 1g or 2g to get codes.

And as stated, the diagnostic port is under the dash on the driver side of a 2g.

One thing I'd like to add, and pardon me for venting: I really really hate it when people say that ONLY '96 and newer cars are OBDII. One guy I worked with at Checker would look people in the face and say "We can't test your car because it's not OBDII. 96 or newer only." Then I told him, "Ed, my car's a 95 and it's OBDII." Even after I told him that some cars prior to 96 had OBDII, he would still tell people that we couldn't test them. Even then, we HAVE the OBDI connecting ports for Chrysler, Ford, and GM for our code reader. He was just an idiot and lazy and didn't know anything about cars. This same guy tried selling platinum spark plugs to everyone that walked in the door, so you can probably tell by my stance on platinums how well we got along.

Anyway... back to your problem. You know your car better than the parts store does. Go back, tell them "My car is OBDII. The port is right here (point at it). Your code reader is right there (point at it). Now read my code, please." If they use the same system as Checker (AutoXRay) they should be able to give you a printout of the codes that they pulled.
 
That is the first peice of good news today! First was a ticket for tabs, add no insurance (I have geiko). $560. Then I drove off and 10 minutes later my check engine light came on Then the guy told me its obd1 and I would have to dish out more money for that. Then I checked emisions and failed 2 out of 3 test so I cant drive it till november 4 to get 07 tabs that dont require a smog test. But I really thank you for your help, maby it wont be so bad! One last question, how do you give reputation points?
 
I'd like to chime in here while on this subject.

I have a 95 Talon Esi, and my check engine light has come on, and keeps popping back up after i've disconnected the battery to reset.

Do I have an OBDII or OBDI port? I'd like to know for when I walk into the local shop asking them to check out what's wrong.

And is my port also located under the dash on the driver's side as stated above?

DSMs, Volkswagen, and maybe two or three other manufacturers went to OBDII a year early and started using it in '95. With DSM, they were doing a complete re-style anyway, so the figured it'd be brighter to go ahead and adopt II into the package.
I don't have a Volkswagen story about it, but at least I can spell it.

In that case, "The guy" (not you, Guy) is a moron. Any CSK (Checker, Shuck's, Kragen's) will test either OBDI or II for free.

Yes. In my experience, I've only seen the port moved once, and even then, it was just pushed further behind the panel to make way for an aftermarket alarm and a control box for some neons or something. It made it a little hard to get the tester connected, but it worked. If you get on your knees outside the car, turn your body upside down and look under the dash between the steering wheel and console, you should see it.
 
Ok thanks you all for the info. And I found the port as stated above. Now I had the test done and its code "p0125 insufficient coolant temperature for closed loop fuel control"

So what do you think this could be? Faulty sensor? Anything helps. Thanks again!
