Rod knock

Rod knock is caused by a spun bearing. This will not cause a check engine light, but when your engine is running, you will hear it. It is very loud and it sounds like somebody hammering away at the block.

You will hear a loud noise. Knock Knock Knock!!!! Your engine will be so loud you would want to turn it off. What does your idle do? An auto part store or a logger will tell you what the check engine light is. Why do you think you have rod knock? We need more info.

It can idle at a fairly normal RPM.

As stated, if you truly have "rod knock", you'd know it. It's one of the worst sounds an engine can make..........next to the sound of "rod release", when the rod finally lets go and exits the bottom of the oil pan, or there-a-bouts. After that, you will catch all kinds of lights, but then again, you'd already know somethings up.

If you truly suspect a spun bearing/rod knock, pull the pan. You'll see the discolored cap of the bad bearing. You can also just drain the oil...if the bearing has spun, the oil should have shavings/glitter in it.

My idle hasn't changed the motor has about less than 20k on it "420a rebulit" it doesn't make the sound at idle and it idles noprmal check engine light is off . When i rev it the sound sound get's faster. I could swear it sound like it is coming from the head.

Sounds like rod knock to me. Samething happened to me, the higher the rev the louder it was until it made a loud POP noise. Hello 6 bolt!!!

I've got a knock...well, more of a tick than a knock...but anyways, mnie started when the weather got cold. Best advice would be the same formontoya gave you. If you don't see anything, you will have at least eliminated the possibility of a spun bearing. Start with the oil change, then come back and let us know how it looked.

I agree that if it was true true rod knock, you wouldn't want to rev it and notice that it gets faster at higher rpm's. you'd want to leave your car parked or have it towed. You'll know right away when something that bad happens. best of luck.

Some one told me to pull the spark plug wire out one at a time while then engine was on to pin point which cylinder had the problem.I tried all of them and the noise didn't go away WTF so what does this mean ? My buddy commented that I must have good compression since i pulled the wire out and the car didn't die .

not to high-jack the thread, but I also have a tick...it seems to be coming from the intake manifold and its rpm dependant. what could it be? it comes and goes...its never ALWAYS there.

I don't trust that spark plug technique. The only way to be sure if you have rod knock is to drop your oil pan. It's an oil change, a dozen bolts and little rtv. Maybe 20minutes if moving slow.

Once you drop it you'll either see shavings in your oil pan or will be able to see the bearings underneath the rods chewed up. If you notice nothing, grab the rod and try to see if it has a lot of play.

Thats what i found in my oil pan after my rod knock..
Although I rode it out for about 30k miles.
