what are the pros and cons for converting to a gm maf and what is involved in doing the converstion :dsm: Im not looking for pshsssss of a BOV just if there is any performance or tuning gains thanks Dan

If you want to run the GM mas, you will need a $200 Maf-translator....installation is pretty much plug and play....and you will be able to vent your BOV to the atmosphere with no problems.

This thread kind of caught my eye, although i'm not planning on venting my bov, i was always curious on the ups and downs of the GM maf. Doesnt the install require you to upgrade your upper intercooler pipe? or can it be done with the stock piping, than again.....if you're wanting to vent i doubt anyone will the stock bov, unless 1g?

There's really no performance advantage unless you are maxing out your current sensor. I think for the cost there are a lot better upgrades that will give you more power.

If the only reason someone would want to do this is to vent the bov, I personally think its pointless. You would need an UICP modified to fit the gm mas. For all beginners, I would just suggest to buy a $50 or so 2g mas and hook that up if you are running a 1g as that sensor is good enough for the power most people will ever make, but be sure to get an afc also, thats another $200...hmmm....

$50 for the GM mas + $200 for the Maf-translator = $250

OR

$50 for a 2g mas + $200 for a S-AFC = $250

Up to you...I think you will have to modify more things if going with the gm mas.

I Like my maft setup. But I havent used the new style safc though(used to have the knob style).I like it because its less of a restriction,I use it for tuning, and lastly to vent.Who doesnt honestly like that?

From what I've heard the GM mas flows much better and can handle airflows for much larger turbos, check the vendor section, I saw a deal from full throttle speed for $300, you get the 2nd gen maft and a GM maf (mas). Supposedly the 2nd gen is tunable, even better than the SAFC2.

Yea,with the 2nd gen maft unit you can hook a wideband to it and it will keep the air/fuel ratio you set.

i hear the maft is pretty crappy in the rain and in places with quick weather change because it does not read temp. anyone know first hand.

OK I was planing on getting a super afc, so if I go with the 2g mas what is involved in putting one in my car wiring and such? thanks Dan

You will also need to install the AFC at the same time to control the leaner condition resulting in running the 2g MAS. Which means you will need to purchase a tuning device or pay to get your vehicle tuned.

If you do not re-use the stock intake pieces you will need:

2G Mas and plug
Air filter
Air filter adapter
1G w/2G MAS intake pipe with recirculation tube bung

Dont forget what GVR4592 said about needing the mas. If you are not overrunning the stock MAS then why get a new one of those?

I just recently installed a 3" GM MAF along with the MAFT (v.2) on my 1G. I was overrunning the stock MAF and I also had a FMIC that came with a TIAL bov already welded in place so I didnt have much of a choice whetther to vent to atmosphere or not. Beofre the GM MAF the car ran like crap between shifts with the TIAL bov. It felt like I was started from 500 rpms every time I shifted gears, not good.

I'm also using a SAFC2 which I had a fairly decent grasp of tuning with the 1G MAF. I am having a tough time tuning the car now with the GM MAF. I'm sure its just a matter of time and information untill I'm able to properly tune it.

One thing I noticed right away was much better throttle response and off-boost power. The car feels alot more torquey down low.

All in all I'm happy with my decision to run the GM MAF, it allows me to VTA which we all love :sneaky: and I know I'll never out flow it so it will never have to be upgraded.

I say go for it.
