Hi, I just got my talon rebuilt about 1700 miles ago and I am having serious problem with burning oil. There are a couple of things that may be causing it and I am going to try and fix them asap.

First, my PCV valve is just chillin, (I know oldman, hook it up :) ) not hooked up or anything because my magnus manifold has a bolt where the nipple should be and that bolt is rtv'd  Also, I just have a breather tube going to a "fuel filter" for my filter

Second, my turbo is going. I have not been able to order a rebuild kit yet as it came on the car and I don't have the serial number (have not been able to take it off), but believe it is a garrett 54/57 trim. It has the in/out shaft play and it also has some front/back shaft play   Could this be causing all my oil problems as there is a little oil in my intake manifold????

Third, I am courious if my rings did not seat properly???? What do you think. Maybe they didn't because of blow by due to the PCV valve, but the mechanic (trustworthy and reputatible) says that it is fine and if anything I should just take it out and run 2 breathers like they do on race engines

So what do you think is the problem

Turbo going? I'd look that part over a little closer. If you did your rebuild properly then you should be ok there. The seals in the turbo can definitely go and cause excess oil consumption. So can Valve seals either being bad or installed improperly. I've seen both. I seen a good machine shop install the valve seals improperly and that thing smoked like a freight train. The kid had to pull the head and take it back to him for repairs which he did and now it is ok. Leave nothing for granted on this one.

Good Luck

I just went thru an oil burning issue, 1 quart per 300 miles, and was 'blackening' the oil at an alarming rate. Turns out my new rings (with a fresh bore and new pistons) were not seating, even after 1500 miles. The rings were a premium stainless type material, and when I took them out 2 weeks ago (yeah back apart it came) they were still like new, and were mirror finish. I replaced them with a softer, cast iron set and my bottom end usage is resolved.

Or try to torque the crap out of them at low rpms and hope that will seat them.

So if the oil is blackening quickly, that indicated 'flame down' past the rings and the combustion gasses are mixing with the oil. If the oil is clean, but dropping the level, most likely the vavle seals. Does it puff smoke whenever you rev it after letting it idle? Kind of like the old dodge caravans with the 3.0 mitsu motor that smoke like $%^& pulling out of redlites. Good luck.

yup, my oil is pretty black. I still have not rebuilt my turbo. Autonut, The times that it puffs is when I shift gears, or rev it in neutral. is that what yours did to? also, do you have you pcv valve hooked up. I am bringing the car in tommorow and having the builder pull the head asap so I can get all that checked out :)mad: theres goes more money:mad:  )

also, is there any way to check my valve seals?

if its burning like that when u shift gears or rev it in neutral then that is ## turbo because it means that the oil seel on the hot side of the turbo is bad letting oil flow into ## o2 housing when the turbo spouls
