Hey guys. I am having a problem with my automatic 95 Eclipse GSX. When the car first starts up for the day I notice when driving the car not warmed up I get a bit of slipping in 2nd and 3rd gear. I haven't ever changed the a/t fluid but that because I just got the car 6 months ago. Remember once the car gets warmed up the tranny seems to shift fine. I guess my questions are:

1. What does this problem sound like?
2. What parts could need to be replaced?
3. Is it worth getting the tranny flushed and seeing if it helps? (remember the costs involed. Don't want to waste money on a bad tranny)
4. Could this be as easy as replacing the end clutches?
5. Am I damaging it more by driving it like this?

Thanks for the help guys!

i would take it in to have the fluid and changed, i've heard of these having them problem when they get over 150-60k miles, but also could be a valve body, first it starts slipping then over time it will start jolting undder acceleration.

Change the fluid + filter yourself and see if that helps. Use a torque wrench though so you get the bolts to the filter on right + also so you don't over tighten the pan bolts and pinch the gasket.

I'd be wary about bringing the car into a trans shop because places like aamco will probably just say you need a complete rebuild no matter what the problem is. If the filter + fluid change doesn't help then look around for a reputable trans shop that works on dsm's. I paid over 2 grand to have aamco do a subpar rebuild on my FWD and although they sold me on their wuarentee they didn't want to honor it when I had problems with the trans.

Inspect the fluid, does it have a brown or grey hint to it? smear some on a white napkin and look at it. Does it smell burnt? If either of two you said yes, then you need to flush that puppy.

Not sure of the increments here on dsms but , I work at a ford dealership and I sell transmission flushes about every 25-35k miles on all vehicles.

A new transmission will cost you around $2000. The flush, not so much. Mine was doing the same thing a few years ago and I lost the transmission. Take it to a competent mechanic, not a national chain, and have them take a look at it while they do the flush. My problem turned out to have been caused by a bad transmission computer. .

Mine was doing the same thing, but only in temperatures near/below zero. And once it was warmed up no problems. Took it to a good friend of mine, who happens to work at aamco. He said he did a flush/filter change, cleaned my valve body, and couldn't really find anything wrong with it. And i couldn't reproduce the symptoms for him as it only happened at my old house on the mountain in the cold mornings. His best idea was the seals in it were starting to wear out, and it would cause blowby when they were cold.. I don't know we'll see how this winter goes.
After the fluid/filter change, I did notice it happening a lot less I think(but i had already replaced my fluid before that). I would say start there, and make sure you have a good level as auto's are funny like that.
I doubt its your end clutch, in 2nd and 3rd gear, unless it's slipping in 3rd going into OD, 4th.

I would do like Blackbyrd said. Ive had more tranny problems with the DSM than any of my past chevys. Flush/Filter some good Amsoil and maybe some Lucast ,it works wonders. Especially if you have some miles on it.

What i would do is take it into a lube and have a flush done. At the most $100. A flush done by a lube is a lot better than a drain and refill. The flush will get all of the old fluid out, even the fluid in the torque converter, when you just drain the fluid in the torque cov. does not get replaced!!!
Also i would buy a bottle of Lucas Oil stop slip for auto trannys, it is some good s*#t. If it still slips then you may need to get it rebuilt or by a built tranny. Good Luck!!!

I would be careful flushing it. My friend at aamco said he would be warry of doing it, and all flushing has to follow an inspection and other things(which cost money, they dont tell you about). If you flush a damaged tranny, you could hurt it more.
Lucas oil stop slip is good from what I hear, It will help with your seals and such if that is where your having your problems.
And if you change your fluid 2-3times, you've effectively gotten +90percent of your old fluid out.
