I just bought a 1997 GST from a dealership. When I test drove it everything seemed fine and dandy. When I take it home I notice several things. First, a ticking noise from the engine at idle that comes and goes. Second, a very low idle RPM (400-500 rpm). Third, very low oil pressure. My first thought is the oil pump is bad. This would explain the low oil pressure and intermitent ticking. How can I adjust my idle? Should I just do a tune up and see what happens? I am very unfamilar with Mitsubishi (I have always had Toyots).

Most likely the ticking sound you here is lifter tick. This is very normal for these cars and there is nothing really you can do besides replace the lifters to get it to go away. Its not doing any harm, so I wouldnt worry about it. I assume you mean 4000-5000rpms and not 400-500. If you have low oil pressure at those rpm levels, I would get the car looked and see whats up with that.

Do a search on idle problems and you will find some possible answers. I hope your engine is going. Is it a bad tick.....tick tick sound with no oil pressure. That could be a bad engine, but I hope not.

The weird thing about this tick is that it will go away for 30 seconds, then come back, and go away. So what is a normal idle? Like I said it idles at 400-500 rpm. Maybe it is all related to the low idle. Low idle= Low current (alternator not producing much power) = low oil pump output= low oil pressure= ticking noise. And as soon as I give it some gas it immediately goes away and doesnt come back. Is there any way to increase idle RPM? I know I could install a fuel controller and bump up idle fuel, but I would rather keep the car stock.

Whoops, I read that wrong. i thought you meant in third gear at 400-500 rpms. Yeah that is real low idle. No vaccum leaks or anything?

you canadjust the idle thru the BISS, but that's not always the best way, especially if there is some logical reason for your low idle. Look up how to adjust the BISS on vfaq.com
