Well I just got my evo III gt turbo back and was looking at it and saw that there is a gash on the exhaust fan nut. I thought that a turbine was supposed to be perfectly balanced....what do you guys think? Anyone else out there notice the same thing about theirs??

That is how they balance it. Its a lot harder to balance the wheel than it is the nut. Don't do anything with it don't turn it dont take it off don't replace it. Just put it on and boost away.

The indentation is normal.

However, I'll warn you to keep an eye on shaft play, given the GT's notorious history. Checking every month or every oil change or every X thousand miles would be a good idea.

Het Mr. Boxx cqan you post a link to this info on the evo 3 gt having notorious shaft play? I'm not saying i doubt you, but i have been looking for negatives about this turbo and really have found none that were prooven or first hand expeience.

I always recommend that people keep an eye on shaft play, regardless of what turbo they run. It takes all of five minutes to pull off the intake pipe and make sure that the compressor wheel isn't scraping the inlet, breaking off pieces of fins and blowing them into the engine, etc. It's just a good preventative maintenance idea, especially on a turbo that has been recently rebuilt, as I am led to believe this one has been.

Yea my post about my previous turbo...I found out later it wasnt even a evo gt but a knock off all together, I ended up getting my money back and investing in a real 16g gt as shown in the pic. Once again the turbo I previusly described was NOT a evo gt but a ebay knock off, lata. :dsm:

No, its absolutely normal. Thats how they balance it. John shepards tubo looks just like that and he has a much nicer one!
