Alright i just got this 90 awd tsi 5 speed with fairly high milage but it still runs and somewhat drives. I got it cheap so its all good. I love this thing even though it needs work. Heres the deal, the car runs good, has a rough idle which ill be looking into and an odd drive terrain issue. When i try to take off in 1st it seems like theres something stopping it, like its hitting a brick wall and it stalls out and wont go. If i go in reverse its perfectly fine, what could be this problem?? please help ive tried searching and got no results on this problem

Try and start in 2nd...if it works then maybe first gear is gone....if it doesnt work then it might be the rear end...check the transfer case also....it all needs to be serviced anyway...so keep us posted

It's probably not the transfercase because reverse wouldn't work either. My transfercase leaked all of the fluid out and it just stopped. The rearend lockedup and I couldn't move forward or backward. I'd say try to start in second too.

I had a similar problem with my galant when i got it, it had the same symptoms as yours had, but mine were progressivelly through all the gears. I looked over everything possible with the driveline and nothing seemed to be wrong or not functional at all. After a while i started to smell my brakes burning everywhere i went, finally i drove home one day and got out the car and both my rear rotors were glowing red. The dumb dumb that had the car before me put regular bolts into the rear calipers causing them not to be able to slide left to right when pressure was applied. When i drove my galant it felt like i was towing another car with a rope or something. Check the rear calipers for the correct bolts which are the sliding bolts, i'm not sure of the size of them but more than half the bolt itself should be smooth and then about 3/8 of it should be threaded. But this is only one possibility that could be causing your problem, I'm just letting you know from my own experience, so if that's the case you don't go through two rear rotors and pads!!!

My guess would be it's in the tranny. I don't think i'd be the brakes due to the fact it goes in reverse fine. Same as if it were the rear. If the rear is locked up it's locked up it won't work in one gear and not the next. Good luck with it i just did a tranny swap in mine :( only thing is with mine is i paid 10 grand for it then had to do a tranny swap.

Also it could be the ebrake is adjusted to tight or something like that. I'm not sure but with the ebrake on your car will not want to drive forward, but will drive backward without as much drag. I may have it backwards, just trying to help.

thanks for the replies, im planning on draining all fluids anyway. Im a little worried but i think it could be the center diff, from which ive heard isnt the cheapest fix but i got the car for 500 so i cant really complain. Anyone think its something else?

any ideas? going to be working on the car this weekend sinceim coming back to home from collage for two days...
