surrey,
its got three hairline cracks on the hot side, is this common? will it cause any problems? should i get them welded up? get a new hot side?

a guy on team-2g sold me a turbo and after shipping it out he "forgot to tell me". claims he got it off a reputable guy on dsmtuners and that it doesnt smoke. also claims this is common. is this something i need to be worried about?

It is common on an mhi turbo to have hairline cracks on the exhaust side after moderate use. The cracks dont become a problem untill they open up to about 1/16+" which usually takes another 75-100k miles.

I have seen people pull of their turbo's, and they have a few hairline cracks on the hot side like you are discribing, this is not a problem like Kieth stated already, those turbo's pulled real hard, and the hairline cracks had no effect on the turbo. It doesn't become a problem untill they begin opening up.

thanks for the reassurance guys, i was a little dismayed because i had to file a paypal dispute in order for the turbo to actually get sent out, then after that he stated that he forgot to tell me which bothered me some.

but after they open up can it be welded up?

Trying to weld the cast housing just creates more cracks unless properly heated before and cooled afterwards. If you plan to continue modding, you will probably upgrade again long before you have to worry about the cracks opening up further. If you keep the 16g for a longer period of time, you can just replace the turbine housing for something new or slightly used easier than getting your current housing repaired.

okay thanks for that tip. most likely ill stick with this turbo or just to an evo 3 16g, all i want is 300hp and not much more, dont want to start throwing much money into it as i have many other cars.
