My front drive side axel is leaking grease all over and the rubber piece that holds the axel to the tranny is ripped. Is this a easy fix or how much to fix it? Do I need a new axel?

Thanks

Either a new axle, or, if it is not too bad, buy the new boot and straps, pack with grease, and reinsatll.

It depends on which side (D or P) the CV boot is ripped. The driver's side is easier to fix than the passenger side since you can take the outer half shaft off without pulling it out the tranny.

It not as easy as most jobs (but not overly difficult), you just have to clean the joint well and pack it with grease. Buy a boot (universal boots wont fit, buy it from the dealer/Satan) but buy Mobil 1 synthetic grease to fill the boot.

If the boot is ripped I would just get a new one. Also the driver side axel is harder but not that much. It has a little bracket to hold it in place and is longer. You could also be leaking out the axel seal on the tranny.

The problem occurs from the driver side axel, so how much is a boot or axel?

Thanks for all the inputs.

EDIT:

The torn is from the inner CV boot

Go to the local parts store and ask they will be able to tell you how much it is going to cost.

You need to buy a boot that's specific to a GSX. I bought 2 kinds from a local parts store and claimed that it they will fit - but they don't. Both were smaller and do not have the groove/shape to fit the shaft. I worked with the driver inner boot, I think I got the OEM part for $20 three years ago.

You also need a band clamper tool, which is around $15.

Add the cost of synthetic grease ($5) and a bigger socket (to take off the wheel from the hub, $20-25) it might add up.

From the dealer, it costs $200 altogether (part+labor) to fix your car.

As I said, I would just buy a new axle if i would do it again.
