Hello everyone. I just recently got my 93 tsi running. When it is at idle after cranking it, I hear a knock comming from the belt area. If I take it out and drive it a few minutes, when I stop and go to idle, the sound is gone. Any ideas on it? thanks in advance.

It could be anything from your waterpump, to your oil pump, to the bearings on your tensioner pullies. My experience is a bad bearing in one of the tensioner pullies and it made a growling/vibrating sound when it was cold. But once it warmed up it was fine. When is the last time your timing belt was changed?

forgot to mention that. I put all new timing belt and components on when I was doing the head, they all have less than 500 miles on them. Also, new water pump. I get good oil pressure, and my screen on my oil pump is good. Is there a chance that one of the timing belt pulleys being loose would cause this? Mabey it is the crank shaft pulley?

It could be something rubbing or hitting the timing belt cover. I had a chunk taken out of my PS belt that was hitting and making a knocking sound but would stop after a while. Do you have a logger and if so is it picking up the knock?

It'd be a good idea to go through there and make sure everything is tight and torqued properly, just for peace of mind.

I will check the crank pulley tomorrow. I have to be at work in a few minutes. I know that my lower timing cover has a bad spot near the bottom. I am thinking that a bad spot on the back of my crank pulley is catching the timing cover, but I dont know why it would stop after driving it a little. I dont have a logger.
