I do believe they are different. I also THINK, I repeat think, that there are differences with AT and 5-speed, and possibly even slight differences with ABS and w/o ABS. Not 100% sure on that though.
 
That and the fact that for your 97 GSX MT there are 7 different ones alone for that. It sucks and eventually you should be about to get the right one, dont think its going to be easy though. Search the threads on axles....theres very few places to order that you will get the correct one first time with no problems. Not alot, but there are a few.

Yes they are the most notable difference is that fwd axles are different lengths, and awd are equal length, this is the greatest contributer to torque steer for us fwd guys. Well this is the case for 1Gs so I figure 2Gs would be the same, that is of course speaking very generally.
