I just recently purchashed a used rebuilt engine and Im checking everything before I drop it in. Manually turning the crankshaft I can get the camshaft sprocket dowels and timing marks to line up but I cant get the oil pump to align with it. I did turn the crank more than six times. What does this mean? and How can I fix it? On a side note the BS has been removed. Thanks.

Are you sure all the timing marks were in the correct spot whe you put on the timing belt? I would take the timing belt off and redo it.

Unfortunately we are looking at someone else's work. So I should take the timing belt off and manually set all the timing marks correctly and reinstall the timing belt? Im concerned with the motor at this time. The motor was from a running car. If the car was ran with this incorrect timing, could there be possible damage to the engine??

Redoing it is not a bad idea. On the other hand, the picture is kind of small and I can't really tell where all your other timing marks are. Please post a bigger one so we can help you line them up. Timing being off can cause huge problems, or no problems at all. It all depends on how much off it is. So like I said, if you post up a clearer picture we can give you some more input. (your cams look a little off, but I can't tell if any damage has been done since I can't see your crank timing)

If the BS has been removed then as long as the cam timing marks and the crank timing mark line up you have nothing to worry about. The oil pump drives one of the balance shafts, so if they were in there it would vibrate real bad. But since there not your cool. Also check the tensioner and see if the pin holes line up. That little hole on the side of the tensioner and the little hole on the tensioner shaft should line up.

Exactly what he said. The timing mark your refering to is to make sure the BS is in time. Without the BS you don't need to worry about it.

Thanks, thats what I was looking for. I think I will replace the belt anyways because I really dont know how old it is and Im sure now would be the best time to do it. Thanks again for the fast replies.

I found that after it was all lined up, I'd hand crank it one turn, and the oil pump would be off. Then I used common sense and realized the oil pump sprocket is much smaller than the crank and cam sprockets. So I figured out that every third rotation of the oil pump, the others would have one complete rotation. Every third time the oil pump rotated, the sprocket would be dead on again.

However, you say you turned it over 6 times and it still doesn't line up. I was just throwing that in for what it's worth.
