Ok i dont want to be repetative, so i looked at the other posts about boost leaks. I know you can check it by building up pressure with a pump or somthing but i dont want to go through all the trouble if i dont really have one. Im not sure, but i feel like i dont get as much power as when i first got the car and i hear a little whitling noise (not bov) from the right side maybe intercooler? Another thing that happens idk if its normal but when i bring up the rpms quickly the boost gauge (stock one i no i no i ordered a real one) shoots up but if i hold the rpms at 5k lets say the boost gauge drops all the way down? is that a boost leak or is that normal? thanks

First off welcome to the forums and please fill out your vehicle profile. Also you will need to build a boost leak tester, no reason to be lazy. Check the classifieds a guy by the name of JaredGSX sells them for like 15$ or something. Also the reason your boost gauge drops back down while holding a steady rpm is that your car isn't under a load strong enough to spin the turbine to full boost.

LOL if you're too lazy to do a boost leak test, you should save yourself the trouble now and get out of DSMs while you can. :) Adam is right, little to no boost can be built while free-revving the engine due to lack of load.

Exactly what I was thinking Bruce. If you dont have the time to do proper maintenance then you picked the wrong car to mod. ROFL

wow.. ya.. you got the WAY wrong car. if you wont even make a boost leak tester..

i hope you didnt buy the car just ### other ppl have them.. if so.. im sry but go buy a honda.

Don't be worried about doing new things. You learn by doing. Just follow things in the Haynes/Chiltons manual, vfaq, and what people say on this site. You'll learn quickly. The whistling could be a pinhole in a weld or something like that on your intercooler endtank. But just build a boost leak tester (or buy one), and follow the vfaq directions of how to use it. It's an indispensable tool.

how to do a boost leak test

I dont know what car you have, But I know with the 1g side mount IC the upper outlet has a tendency to corrode. Could be causing the sound.

I never wanted to do a boost leak test either, until I actually tired it and realized how incredibly easy it is to do. Everyone here makes it sound too complicated. You don't need to "build" a "boost leak tester". Just stick a soda can in the turbo inlet coupler to block it off (be sure to clamp it in), then tee a hose to your compressor (or pump) into your BOV line. Simple as that. Obviously you need an aftermarket boost gauge to do it this way, but that's a requirement for moding the car anyway.:thumb:

LOL Boost leak tester it shall be. If i find a leak im just thinking of buying an intercooler with a whole new piping set up, the thing is that i looked at them on ebay and i saw that they all had different piping paterns. Witch would be the best one to get? Something not to big of a pain to get in. Or is there a set of metal tubing that will fit for the stock intercooler?

If you find a boost leak, you fix it. You don't need to buy anything. Just adjust the coupler and/or clamps. But if you do get a front mount, get the short route piping that looks like this:
