Hello, I'm currently looking at a 6 bolt turbo motor in a car to purchase. I need some help though. The car, a 93 laser fwd auto, appears to be originally a NT. The tach boost gauge is missing and there isn't an aftermarket boost gauge installed. Now b/c of the 93 i've checked for the oil pan and it is a 6 bolt. My concern is now whether the motor was originally a NT and the previous owner slapped a turbo on there or if the motor is originally a turbo motor. I've looked for the knock sensor and i could not see it. The motor looks clean and compression was performed on a cold engine reading 175~180 psi. The std compression on std turbo is 164psi. I believe the std compression on a NT is 192psi. Let me know what else to look for. Thanks

If the turbo conversion was done correctly you won't be able to tell it apart from an original turbo engine. Also keep in mind that the car has had 16 years of shadetree mechanics tinkering and rigging under the hood, so theres probally a lot that could appear askew. If it was my car I would trace the vin# to find out if it was originally a turbo car.

Look at the VIN...
The first digit = Country (4=US)
Second digit= Make, E=Eagle, A=Mitsu, P=Plymouth
Third Digit= Vehicle Type (3=Car)
Fourth Digit= Seat Belts? (B=Manual, eh C=Auto)
Fifth Digit= Line (S= all FWD models, T= all AWD tel, Galants= ? - Can anybody tell me this for sure?)
Sixth Digit= Price Class (Higher number=higher trim, My TSiAWD is 6-Any others out there?)
Seventh Digit= Body Style (4=Hatchback)
Eighth Digit= Engine (T or B=1.8L, R or E=2.0L N/A, U or F=2.0L T/C) - (T,R,U used thru 92; B,E,F 93 on- Are there more?)
Ninth Digit= A check digit. Derived by a "secret formula" to verify the other data. I don't know the formula, or if it's just a lookup for year, model, etc.
Tenth Digit = Year, A=1980, B=1981. They skipped I and O, so J=1988 and P=1993. Let me know if other letters were skipped.
Eleventh Digit= Plant (K= DSM in Normal, IL)

i think the car is originally non turbo. There isn't a boost gauge on the tach. Only way a vin may help is if it's on the motor right?

Gauges are easy to swapout, for one reason or another it may not be the original gauge cluster.

Look up the vin...

It doesn't make sense someone w/a turbo motor would swap in a nt gauge. I checked the vin# and it's originally a NT. I noticed the injectors were pink 240cc. No injector resistor installed. No knock sensor. All the evidences leads to a NT with a turbo slapped on. My eagerness to find a replacement turbo motor almost allowed myself to buy this motor w/o complete knowledge. I'm gonna wait for a safe replacement.

Just a tip for anyone lookin for a turbo motor to pull.
Make sure the coolant and oil lines for the turbo is completely connnected.
Check for injectors color/stamped model
check for injector resistor
check for knock sensor
check compression std 164psi. NA is std 192psi
check the vin
for 6 bolt/7 bolt, check the oil pan

Thanks to all those that replied
