Here's my problem. Sometimes, I'll punch it in first or second, and I will just be able to feel it falling on its face...especially in first. First ussually yields small missfires from 5000rpms+. Other times though, it will pull beautifully and powerfully to redline. If I rev it in nuetral to redline I get a big misfire at 5500rpms and 6500rpms. This problem really doesn't seem to show it's face in the higher gears at all. I have fixed all my boost leaks, changed my spark plugs (6es, gapped to .028), and tried known good wires. My spool is a little late too. I am currently running 7psi on an Evo 3 16g. I get 7psi in first by about 4200rpms, and in second by about 3600rpms.

you dont have an wire shavings or anything that metal can jump to from the coil pack itself do you? Because once I was running wire through my firewall and cut the wire and didnt realize I left little speaker wire shavings laying on the manifold and my car would miss every once and a while, and I had a friend rev it at night and realize the coil pack or sparkplug itself was somehow arching and jumping to the little speaker wires it was weird... So I cleaned everything up, changed the wires to bigger performance wires, put some ngk plugs in and it went away... Doubt you have the same problem but just my experience...

When I had a turbo going bad it would do something similar. It was like one minute it would go (make boost) and another minute it felt like it wasnt going to go no where.

I dont think it would hurt to pull the intake off and check the turbo for shaft play. Real easy to determine and if not then we can rule that out.

I installed a brand new MHI Evo 3 16g 400 miles ago...and I had this problem before I replaced the turbo.

Hope you dont have a bad ecu, those models are notorious for capacitors leaking and causing crazy problems like that.

How are you able to hold 7 PSI of boost on the E316G? As you probably know, they like to boost to about 22-24 PSI. Also, you're still running stock fuel pump and injectors??? How much mileage on your engine? If it's quite high, I would recommend running some Sea Foam through your engine if you haven't already done so within the last 20k miles.
Just my .02

I am able to hold that low of boost because I have a cat (I'm pretty sure it's high flow since it's welded to 3 inch pipes), and I have ported the turbo specifically for boost creep. It's a miracle I know. The engine was rebuilt a few thousand miles ago. Compression is 152psi across the board.

I've been getting tons of phantom knock ever since I bought my car. Yesterday I was logging and driving on the freeway (with an alarm set if knock goes above 15). The second I shifted into 5th, I hear BEEP BEEP BEEP. I think, ok, so I let off the throttle for a second (keep in mind I'm at 2800rpms and about 1/4 throttle before I let off), and then I 1/4 throttle it again....beeping comes RIGHT back. This phantom knock WOULDN'T leave. It stayed on for another 10 seconds (even with a few more letting off the throttles and putting it back on), untill I just turned the damn logger off! I checked the log later and it timing was FREAKING out. The timing was being pulled to -2 and stuff. I'm beggining to also suspect this is my missing problem. I went over a log that I took of just a nuetral rev where I floored it. I ended up getting 43 counts of knock the second I started building some boost.

Have you checked your knock sensor? I've heard people saying sometimes itll come out or get gunked up and cause more phantom knock. Odds are if you're getting that much knock, its pulling that timing and like you said, causing the problems. What kind of gas are you running? How are your intake temps? That can cause knock and for timing to get pulled too.

Oh I KNOW it's phantom knock. I have 43 counts at 35% throttle at 2500rpms and my boost is set at 7psi. I'll try the knock sensor idea.

just a guess, but maybe the MAF. My neighbor had his go bad on his 90 gsx, and it was causing all kinds of funky problems... His seemed to run better without it. I would check it out
