Exh. Mani. Surface Temperature

Well seeing as how my egt reads 1300 degrees at crusing and up to 1600 at wot I'd guess somewhere between there is a safe bet.

But that is the actual gas temperature. I was wondering what the outer surface of the manifold's temperature is. Wouldn't the heat dissipate somewhat through the iron?

That's why I said somewhere between those temperatures. Figure 1300 degrees on the low end and 1600 max. It's not going to drop 500 hundred degrees. Hell cruising at 80+mph my egt registers 1450 or more, do that for an hour or two and the manifold will easily hit 1300 degrees.

Ah... I'm looking to coat it. I was going to get that 1200* paint, but it sounds likd that's not going to be high-temp enough. I don't really want to pay for Jet Coating, but I guess that's what I'll have to do.

What about a stock heat shield? I don't have one, but if I could find one at the junkyard, would 1200* paint be enough to paint the heat shield?

The high-temp paint will be fine on a stock heat shield, I sprayed mine black and it's held up fine for about a year now.

I use VHT Flameproof. The can says it's good up to 2000 degrees, so I'm pretty sure it won't burn off.

Did you use the 1200* or the 500* ?

You're definitely gonna need something rated more than 500*. I know this since I tried it once. It started to peel and dis-color really bad around the bolts and then just spread across the whole shield eventually. I re-painted it with 1200* paint and it has held up just fine. You can also use barbecue paint on it, I believe that is rated at 1200* as well, I guess just whatever is cheaper.

I used 1200* and just sprayed it black. I don't think the heat sheild sees those kind of tempertures anyway but I used it just to be safe.

I used grill paint on my last one I had and it worked awesome, I've now got a JM Fab polished heatshield for a little bling factor underneath the hood :D
