medicine hat,
i was told that to remove the engine out of my car that you have to pull the engine out through the bottom of the car...is this true???? how long does it ussually take to remove and put a different motor in these cars??

No and depends on the experience level of the person removing and installing the motor.

Later,

In order to remove from the bottom, you have to remove a bunch of stuff. Who does that anyway where it's easier to lift from the top.
Most of the time, it's a weekend job for a pretty competent mechanic.

ok thats what i was wondering....im just trying to figure out if my mechanic is trying to rip me off....hes telling me that he would need a good 4 or 5 days to remove and install another engine in my car...which obviously means its GOING to cost more cause hes going to take so long...hes constantly trying to tell me to sell this car..(hes kind of a family friend as well as our mechanic...i repeat...KINDA our friend) but i dont want to i love it...but anyways...back to the motor...hes saying he'd have to take it out the bottom...is this going by the book???? do u think hes trying to rip me off??? Any help would be appreciated...and as quickly as possible too!! hes suposed to start doing this in the next few days!!.. i also have some other questionable info he told me about my car if you'd like to hear it and clarify it let me know...but let me know bout the motor first

When I removed my engine, I did it out the bottom, just because it was easier, I had no engine hoist and I did it at my leisure over a weekend. Took maybe 5-6 hours total to remove the engine and trans, only because I am mechanically retarded. We put it back in through the top. I have friends who run their own shops who can drop the motor and trans in maybe 2-3 hours, depending on if they have help or not.

i recentely bought a 93 turbo motor and you know as normal i unbolted all the bolts from the bellhousing to the block and everything that looks like would be holding the tranny to the motor block but i have one problem the transmission is stuck or something??? There is a gap between the block and bellhousin about 2 inches wide and it still wont come apart from the block does anybody know what is wrong ??? somebody help on this im confused ???? thanks

-Is the motor still in the car? If it is, it's much easier if you drop the tranny 1st then remove the motor.

I lifted mine out as one big peice. I disconnected all wiring and sensors, took off all motor mounts, belts, accessories, lines, etc., and then I wrapped a big chain around the whole thing and lifted it all out. Then I worked on it and disassembled everything including the tranny. You may have to left the transmissoin side hang down quite a bit while you lift the engine out, it's hard to get it in and out when it's completely horizontal.

i lifted mine out as one piece to but there is nothin that we can see holding the tranny to the motor. We are stumped about it ??? The motor and tranny are in the back of a truck with a 2 inch gap all the way around the bellhousing and the block so it just wont come any farther we have no clue whats wrong??

im just curious, are we talking about a standard or automatic? automatic has flywheel bolts that attach to the torque converter that generally is on the transmission pretty good, you gotta remove those..... standard transmissions shouldnt have anything else holding it besides the bellhousing bolts and weight........
good luck!

ps, maybe u need a 6 foot prybar like I have........I use it WAYYYYY more than I really should. hehehehehe

im looking for any tips on removing my old beaten 4g63 and installing my new jdm 4g63 in my 92 talon. is there anything i reall yneed to know? tips you have? any help would be great, thx

The best advice I can give is to make sure you label all vacume lines, wires and hoses use some tape and a felt tip marker that way the swap would be pretty straight forward also make sure you do all the free up grades while the motor is out i/e balance shaft removel port out the intake mainfold etc. Also make sure the timing belt is in good condition I can't think of anything else but I'll be sure to reply if I do, Good Luck on the swap!

usdm and jdm mistu engines for the eclipses are the same, as with most mitsu cars and models. Just get a usdm one and save yourself some money.

I have a question, can you take out the motor in a 91 turbo fwd automatic, without taking the tranny out.

Im working on it right now and i got everything disconnected from the motor and i dont really feel like taking out the axel's and tranny because im just junkin it w/ the car.

Anyone??

Well, hopefully someone has an answer.

It looks like the last bolt i have to get off holding the tranny to the block is a real bi*** to get at and it looks like im gonna have to take the axel out anyways just to get at it.

No you can't. I just took a engine and tranny out of a 90 FWD TSI and it was a snug fit and took some wiggling to get out. Trying to leave the tranny in there would be impossible.

First of all, I've done this swap on my car and a friends and the JDM is not only more powerful, but also more reliable. To do the swap right requires using a few USDM parts but mostly doing some creative thinking when trying to fit the JDM stuff under your hood. You may find some problems with the throttle body, that's where I found the biggest difference. That and the fuel injection system, I used both of these and notices a nice noticable twenty horse difference. He's right about the balance shafts why it's out. write me if you have any questions at all.

Oh, also a J-spec engine is WAY cheaper and comes with far few miles, less than thirty thousand to be specific. Mine came from one of those importer guys and cost 600, compression tested, mileage proof and everything. Good luck
