Installing rear stut bar - Can I toss the rubber cap from top the strut?

I was cutting a hole in the rear side trim piece to accommodate my new strut brace. As I placed the bracket on the bolts to tighten it down, I realized. There no room to put the black rubber topper thingy back on.
I could cut and make it fit, but... if I just left it off, it would be MUCH better. Should I worry about moister or any crap coming up through there. What about damage to the strut itself?

What y'all think about that? ...and thank you!

also the rubber caps only seal up the upper part of it so im guessing the lower part is sealed pretty well, so i doubt they do anything unless you have rain leaking though your hatch. Also i have tokico 5 ways so i have it off to change my settings from time to time
