I have been reading some about using seafoam to clean out the engine of carbon build up in the engine. I have low compression on only one cylinder in my car. I know there are a few things that could cause this low compression, but my question is could carbon build up cause this low compression? If so will the seafoam clear up the low compression? Please do not give me other things that cause low compression, i just want to know if carbon could cause this. Thanks.

If anything carbon will cause higher compression if it is gunking up the pistons rings and sealing up some bad spots. In EXTREME cases if could cause low compression if it is built up on the exhaust valve and is causes it not to close all of the way. I would go ahead and use it anyways. No harm in using it. Use it and get back to us.

yeah it wouldnt hurt, just get a 3 foot hose and attach it to "P" on your throttle body. Go for a nice drive after to kill people behind you and see what your #'s say after.

Carbon could wreak havoc in more ways than one. It could have built up on your valves, making them not seat right anymore, thus causing low compression. In any case, running some Seafoam through there definitely wouldn't hurt.

ROFL I like that.

Seriously though, be careful when you're doing this, smoke will be everywhere!

Thanks for the replies, Im going to try this a little later tonight and see what my numbers come out to be. I knew that the carbon causes higher compression, I just was not sure if it could go the other way too, but we will see. ill post up after I am done and let you all know. :thumb:

Carbon build up will increase the compression.
It rise my numbers to about 160psi ( used to be 130-140psi). When, I did a "wet test" It went to 180-190 psi. So, that is how I discovered my annoying knock after all the PITA.

It is hard to take it off from the Piston with Seafom / other products. I tried and didn't work for me. Now I am going to have to remove the head and expend a little more $ to Install the 2G piston with new rings..... A little cheap upgrade....

Good luck, I hope it work for you.

How much would a good pair of used 2g pistons go for?:sneaky:

Ok well i got some seafoam, oil, filter, and some new spark plugs and went to town on the car for awhile. The seafoam worked well cleared out the engine as intended. I ran about half the can through the car and it worked pretty good. It helped the car run better, but it did not help my compression. I checked my compression before the seafoam and it came out to 148-130-120-130. After the seafom and oil change i rechecked the compression. It read 148-135-120-125. I then did a wet test on it and came up with 148-140-130-150. So all in all the seafoam worked for its purpose of cleaning out the carbon, but did not help my compression. It looks like i have some bad rings so ill be rebuilding the motor in a few months.

Yea the rings in your number one cylinder are definately going out if it jumped 25 points with oil. Common problem for some reason on cylinder number one on DSM's. Not really sure why but it is. Once you get it apart you will be able to find out what caused the other low numbers.
