Allright I don't know how much of noob question this is but I don't know where to ask it. My little bro has a 96 gst that he just did a valve job on. I have a 3000gt and when you do the timing on that you set the timing so that the gernade opin moves freely in and out....you rotate it a few times let it sit and repeat making sure the pin moves in and out freely. He was alittle impatient and set hte timing using this technique because at the time I coudn't remember the exact technique to do even though I have set a few DSM's myself. So he did it that way and put the car back together before I had a chance to do anything....after a few searches I now remember using hte clearence method where you make sure that the gap between the tensioner and the arms is .15-.18. My question is does 3000gt method work alright or should he tear it back down and check that gap?? THanks

That's a good question. I think it does, but I didn't try the 6G72 method of preloading until the pin moves freely. I know lots of the guys that worked in dealerships use the 6G72 way on the 4G63 so he should be fine. It seems to come up with the right clearance when I've done in on my Stealths.

Yes, making sure the pin moves in and out freely after rotating and letting it settle will automatically make the distance between the tensioner arm and auto tensioner body be about .157 in. (spec is .150 - .177 in.). I've done over a dozen dsm TB's this way every one done correctly.

Me too, your fine!
