T minus a couple more days before I perform the compression test on my DSM. If, in fact, I DO need pistons, I need a little direction on what I should do as far what pistons I should purchase. A friend of mine recently had new pistons installed in his '90 GSX and his engine builder went with Mitsubishi OEM, and he didn't have the cylinders bored, just reconditioned. Some people are telling me this is bad, others are saying it should be OK. My buddy doesn't seem to have any trouble with the car(except, of course, for the initial break-in period...no major spooling
) But this is also an individual experience. We all know every DSM, Talon, and Laser develops it's own gremlins and results for all are different. I don't have money now for a bore job, but I do for the pistons. If a bore is imperative, I will need to know to save up some money. Before my car died, I didn't have any problems with the internals as far as compression and valve train is concerned. Would my car require a simple piston installation? Or do I have to go the anal route(plasti-gauge, mics, feeler gages, etc.) I have the tools and experience to perform this, but need to know what exactly I'm going up against...I don't want to spend a crap-load of money on pistons, bearings, and rings just to put everything back together and get it running just to hear some serious piston slap! And as far as the piston brand itself is concerned, would the Mitsu pieces be OK? Is there a better brand that's plus or minus the same price? How about rod bearings and rings? Lastly, my friend's engine builder said I needed a special cylinder hone to condition the bores...The honer I have is the smooth stone honer(in layman's terms: the one that looks like a small chimney sweeper with smooth stones at the end of each bristle) that runs off a drill. Does this suffice? Or is there a legendary honer I need to get my hands on? Any information is much appreciated in advance, although accuracy is a MUST! Thanks again, guys!
