I need to bring myself up to speed here. My younger brother recently bought a basket case 2nd gen Eclipse from a local kid here that smoked the engine. He stuck a rod through the block and blamed the cam belt...I'm new to these cars, but I've been working on cars longer than this kid has been alive, his story is a little weak. Anyway, included in the purchase was a fresh engine that was built at a local machine shop. I'm very familiar with the shop and trust their build, so I'm not worried about that. What I'm worried about is the engine combo. My brother's car is a 2nd gen AWD 5 speed. The engine combo is a 1st gen block with a 2nd gen head. There seem to be some compatibility issues. Is this a common engine combo in a 2nd gen car? What am I going to need in terms of flywheel/starter motor/engine mounts/etc... to make this work?

Thanks for any help,

Greg

Fantastic, this is exactly what I was looking for. I welcome as much advise as possible. Thanks for the feedback and the links.

As for the 1st gen engine, I'm not sure of the year, but the crank has 6 bolts. The sheetmetal engine plate that needs to be put on the engine before the flywheel has the starter in a different place on the 1st gen plate than the 2nd gen. I'll check out those links, maybe there's info on that there.

Thanks,
Greg
