Short Block Long Block [Merged 1-8]

A shortblock usually refers to the bottom end. The block including pistons, rods, crank etc. The longblock usually refers to the shortblock with the top end including heads and cams. I'm sure there is a more technical explanation but that is the simple answer.

I am just curious, What exactly is the difference between a short and a long block? Like what are all the benifits too. Thanks.

A short block includes the block, crank and pistons.

Longblock is a shortblock with the head, cams and all camshaft accessories.

It's easier to work with a longblock. You don't have to do as much work and worry about torque settings being exact, etc.

Ok, now with that out of the way I had another question that seems to fit with this thread. Is there a difference in short blocks between the 1gen Turbo DSMs and NA DSMs? Thanks.

A SHORT BLOCK, in any terms, is the bottom end, which is the block, crankshafts/pistons/rods. the long block is the short block plus the cylinder head. :thumb:

I was wonderinf what the diffrence in between a long or short block? i was looking around on the net, and found a place to buy new 420a motors. but the have both short and long. The only thing i could think of was the long part was the fact that the engine comes with the head, un like the short which doesn't. i'm not sure if thats what is ment, i would really like to know the diffrence, and or which is better?

like you said maybe its the same block just that one includes the head and the other not.

Can you give us the web site or more information, to explain you about it. I am not sure what do u mean.
I belive They mean that It coomes With Long rod Or It come stroked (2.2L)

But if u post the web site or more info i may help you.
Tito

Ohhh ok

Long Block:
Come with everything. It is like a race engine. Everything is rebuild. It is not bad, but it is a lot of cash for it. If u have the money go for it.
Note :
Long blocks are shipped without valve cover and without oil pan and no timing cover AND It doesn't have exhaust manifold and intake manifold!

Short block:
It is not that bad To buy!
It is only the bottom end and it should come like bullet proff. It is nice for the pocket. It comes ready to swap for ur bottom. All depend of your goals

Tell me your goals with the car, And we can help u a little more.

The facts are:
2.0L N/A Won't go more than 200Whp ( Until somebody shows me I am wrong)
With the 2.0L You won't have a crazy horsepower unleast u go Turbo!
2.2L Will help U a little bit because it will give u a lot of torque but u won't go far.(Turbo helps a lot)
But if u want to go rally far away! Do a 2.4L swap (It is a PITA do a research first!) And wherever u go Turbo or N/A It will be crazy!

Tito

k, i'm planin, on making this car pretty damn fast, u checked that wed sit i offered right? if yes, i want to get the 2.2 stroker, with the forged crank, but i need a head as well, i want to buy the long block because of the ready head. so would it be smarted to just buy the long and the stroker crank both, rather than the short stroker, and get my head redone? i am planing on putting both nitruos and turbo on this car, i'll be runnin pretty high on both.

Well For what I read.

This is my opinion.
If u have the money Go for the Longblock. (will be a killer engine! for ur goals.)

If u don't have much money.
Go for the Short block
Them the Head
Turbo
And last nitrous

But remeber u will be having madness Hp. To get ther U will need a lot of Support Mods!
IT is not easy to Put an engine and Run 500WHp. U will need to upgrade the brakes, suspension, Fuel, Axle, transmission, ETc...

It is going to be a Expensive way

sorry but a long block is NOT like a race motor. it IS just like a new factory motor, every thing is to stock specs. w/out valve cover and oil pan.(sometimes)
short block is all so stock spec w/out the head and oil pan. still comes w/ crank, rods, and pistons.
long block is the way to go if your looking to just replace, not if your wanting to up grade.

oh, i was wonderin if i should go stroker if i'm gona go turbo/n2o, do they run good together? i wonderin if it will have to high compression.
