Okay the other day when i was taking my front rim off to change my rotors and brakes, one of the studs that the lug screws on broke. Will i have to replace the whole hub or is there a way to get to the stud?

There should be a way to get the stud out. It would require removing the hub and pounding or pressing out the damaged stud. You should be able to aquire another from a part store. Check your shop manual for specifics on removing it.

The wheel studs are pressed in. They are removed with a punch and hammer. Locate the broken stud in an area where you can feel the stud head on the back side of the rotor. Punch the stud out and tap in a new one. (One stud my son broke I had to drill mostly out). Routine job for unexperienced such as me...

So basically all i have to do is hammer the stud out and fit the new one in. If that is the case the broken one is almost half the size and will come out but i will not be able to fit a full size stud in. Too long.

Alright guys thanks for everything. Do you think autozone will carry the replacement stud?

You can get studs from RRE, but they are longer than the stock ones. The stock are 30mm and RRE are 52mm. You can't just hammer in the new studs. You can put the stud in and tighten up the lug nut with the wheel on to pull the stud into the hub. Sometimes the stud spins with the lug nut so you have to put pressure on the stud. I just tilted the wheel on the stud so it didnt move when I tightened up the lug nut. By any chance, does anyone know if a 2g non ABS rear hub has to be pressed out? I took off the 4 bolts in the hub, but it doesnt seem to want to come off. Am I missing anything?

all ya gotta do...take off all the junk....wheel...calipers....rotor...then take a hammer....hit the mo-fo like...3 times real hard...it should pop right out....DON'T WARP YOUR ROTOR! then go to autozone, advanced auto, where ever....tellem what kinda car u got....they have it....take the new one...put it in...hit it with a hammer....but MAKE SURE IT'S STRIAGHT.....then put it all back together...and tighten the lug up pretty tight....then....in a day or 2...after driving it...go bak and make SURE the lug is still tight, there isn't really any way of telling whether that new stud sunk into the back of the rotor without taking it all off again...so keep making sure it was plenty tight.....mine came off the first time...and totally screwed my new brake job...and lotsa other goodies...so...do it right.

I need to replace ALL my wheel studs with longer ones cuz of a wheel spacer issue

(please don't comment on the wheel spacer
thing unless you do here:)

But since I'm going to be changing 20 of them, can ya'll give me tips, tricks, how-to, anything? I did a search and didn't come up with much. I was told if I take the hub off I might have to repack my bearings...I'm a newbie on this one, please any and all help.

Take care,
Boz

Don't take the hub off. You need to put something behind the hub though, something solid so that when you hammer out the studs you don't wreck your hub and/or bearings. Basically that's it. I used a really big hammer to put on the back side, it's kinda like driving a nail out of a loose board, you need something solid behind it or it will just bounce and bend. Hope that makes some sense. Then putting the new ones in you need to find a nut that fits your threads and a washer to go between the nut and the hub. Then with a big breaker bar or something like it, you just tighten down the nut until the head of the stud is flush with the back of the hub. I am sure there is a vfaq or something, just to tired to look it up right now.

Use an air chisel with a flat hammer bit against a garbage nut screwed onto the end of the stud to "save" the threads (even though you're not re-using them). It'll just give you a little more meat to distribute the hammering with.

there is no hidden bolt get a hammer and hit the rotor between the wheel studs till it comes off they can be pretty stubborn also try some penetrating lube where the rotor meets the bearing housing works every time for me

rotor is off but now how do you put the new stud in. i hammer the old stud lose but it is stuck in and there is no way for the new one to fit or the old one to come out. do i have to take any other parts to do this.

I decided that I wouldn't start my own thread, but ask my question in this one. Lets say that I get the new wheel stud, how hard would it be for me to do it at home instead of having a shop do it? Pretty much, what all is required to get the new stud in properly?

Get a stack of washers, put the stud in the hole, and screw on a lugnut. The washers will act as a wheel as the lugnut presses the stud in.

Yes, you knock the old stud out with a hammer or mallet. It will be difficult to get it out once loose but it will come out. Once it is out you can put the new stud in, which will be just as difficult as getting the old one out, but it WILL go back in. Move the wheel hub around till you find a good spot. I usually get some crap lug nuts from the parts store and some washers to fit over the stud, about 5 or 6 to clear the non-threaded part, this will help you center the stud as you are seating it in the hub. While I have the convenience of an impact wrench not many do, but place the washers over the new stud and use the crap lug nut to draw it tight. DO NOT use the lugs you are putting back on the car, this will destroy them. Good Luck! :thumb:

Alex99gst, that is entirely up to you. It is not a hard job for me, but I've done so many already. If you are confindent go for it, if you don't want to screw it up, take it to a shop and pay a mechanic to do it for you.

so i was taking off my front driver side wheel to do a brake job...when i noticed that one of the lugs was spinning but not backing out, i knew it was stripped but i kept going praying it would come off, after some time i got it out..my question is, do i have to buy a whole new hub, or can i just replace that stud?
thank for your help

You can replace the stud. One of mine snapped on my rear drivers side wheel and I was quoted around 50 to have it replaced so I just said screw it and I still only have 4 on that wheel. One of these days I will get around to replacing it.

Replacing it is really easy, more so if you have electric/air powered impact wrenches:

Hammer out the old stud. Make use you use a fairly big hammer. Hammer it straight out. Hit the stud head on. Don't sit there and tap it out. Hit it like you mean it. You don't want to sit there and baby it and have to hit it many times as you will bend the stud and risk hitting other studs by accident. Give it a good blow.

Next, put the new stud in the hole from the back. Slid on 2 washers (this is important as the 2 washers will act as bearings) and then a lug nut (open head, not dome capped). Tighen the lug nut until it draws the stud all the way into the hub/steering knuckle.

The stud should cost around $1-$2 dollars. Just saved you $48 :)

well if your going to do it yourself, which I didnt because they were rusted to $#%@, and had to be torched out, Then I recommend doing only one.
