Hey im kinda confused on how to do a boost leak test, im trying to get a tester, i got a compressor at home and everything, but my question is, is the car supposed to be running or not when i do the test? and have someone sit in the car and watch the aftermarket boost gauge, and i set the compressor to what i have my boost at for everyday driving? or a little bit higher? andwhen im using the compressor the boost gauge should read what i have it set at ? if there are no leaks right? i have a MBC, and i read i need to plug it. should and should i put it on the turbo and the throttle body to check for leaks?ive been using the search button more to look up topics but im still a little confused... im still new to DSMs and turbos, but help is greatly appreciated.

thanks,

david

1. Warm the car up (don't have to but it helps your intake valves seal up)
2. Shut the car off, pull the intake pipe, and put your boost leak tester on the turbo inlet.
3. With the throttle wide open pressurize the to about 15-20psi.
4. Use a spray bottle full of soapy water and spray down all your intercooler piping and all around your intake manifold and fuel injectors.
5. Fix leaks

:hellyeah:

NOTE: Some people say to put the engine at 30*ATDC to close the intake valves, you can do this but most of the time it's unnecessary, as once you pressurize it to 15ish and up the pressure usually forces the valves open.

What do you use to keep the throttle open? just stuff something between the throttle to keep it propped open?

I usually just hold it open with one hand while I put the air compressor on the boost leak tester valve with my other hand, then to be more thorough after I fix any leaks between the turbo outlet and the throttle body elbow I take off the upper intercooler pipe and put the boost leak tester on the tb elbow, and again holding the throttle open with my hand test the system, thereby ruling out the intercooler piping first and narrowing it down to the tb gaskets, tb shaft seals, intake manifold gasket, brake booster check vavle, pcv valve, fuel injectors, egr valve, and intake valve seals.

I think that's it. I had a boost leak for months that I couldn't track down, turned out to be my egr valve was stuck open, allowing fresh boost to enter the exhaust. :notgood:
