MD State Inspection Woes

If anybody works at or knows someone who works at a MD state inspection capable shop, PM me. I have a rather special problem. I'm not looking to buy my inspection, I just need help with one thing.

The VIN plate on the dash is missing. (I have no clue! can't find it in the car...)
But the title matches the Fed sticker in the door and the stamping on the firewall. They won't even initiate the inspection without the dash tag and you wouldn't believe what you have to go through to get a replacement.

IF I where you I would go throw the headache to get the VIN stright. OR you could just wait till you get pullled over and have to deal with the police on the side of the road. I know what a pain in the ass it is to get the VIN stright. BTW I am a MD inspector

Here's the skinny:
I need to take the car up to the Glen Burnie State Police garage for an inspection (which can only be performed on Tuesdays during a 3 hour window that starts during rush hour) to verify all the VIN tags. The car has a "JDM" motor in it so that VIN's not going to match. Then, if they're good to me, I get a new VIN issued by the state. The can't/won't reissue me the federal VIN. The car would then have to be retitled and re-registered with the new MD VIN. Then I can get my inspection started. But, since my temporary registration will expire before all the BS, I have to have the car flatbed towed everywhere since you cannot get an extension on temporary registration.

I don't think I've ever had a police officer check my VIN plate in a car. They only look at the tags and the registration.

There's also the questionable value the car will have afterwards. I was told it may be classified as a salvage title by the MVA.

So, I really just need an inspection done where they're willing to write down the VIN that stamped and stickered half a dozen other locations on the car (and it matches my title/registration!)

To be hounst I dont know of any inspector that would let it go for you. Dont get me wrong there are some out there that will, but I would not put my ass on the line for you, If they get caught passing it, its like a 10,000 fine and they lose there inspection licions. and a hole lot of other shit to go throw.

And with the motor swap I dont think you will have any problem on that one I dont think there is a VIN number on the motor, I know my old motor that came out of my car does not have the VIN on it, and the new 6bolt that is in the car has no VIN on it, All you have to do on that one is tell them the motor blew up and you replaced it with a used one, There is no law in the book about that, as long as the emisitions stuff is all there

I do also believe there is jail time possibilities too. When I was a tech the state inspector at the shop took it VERY seriously as any pass throughs would be the end of his career as well as many other bad things.

I wasn't so much looking for a pass-through as someone willing to use on of the other 6 VIN stampings on the car and to do a proper inspection. It's plain stupid to REQUIRE it to be the dash plate. It seems the PO of the car swapped the dash for one that didn't have cracks in the vinyl and failed to swap the plate over. I have the title, the original warranty card, and all the stampings on the car EXCEPT the dash plate.

Oddly enough, I've gotten offers to "sell" me an inspection cert but nobody willing to do an inspection on a car missing the dash tag. This state is seriously ****** in it's automotive ownership requirements. I could rant for pages

The VIN requirement isn't from your state. It's Federal. But like all laws, they only impede the honest.
You're going to have to bite it, and get the troopers to verify the car and assign a new ID number to the car. Or, take you chances with doing it illegally.

You might try asking for an appointment with the commander at the local troopers office, and see if they can make an accommodation for you. Explain how much you want to comply, and how unreasonably inconvenient the whole process is.
