i want to change my gear oil to gm synchromesh. excuse my stupidity but is the filler plug the one on top of the transmission with the sensor going through it? i looked in the owners manual and it was no help at all.

It is on the side of the trasnmition. About half way up on the front side (the side closest to the radiator). Fair size like 17mm or Just drain and then fill it till the fluid is level with the bottem of the hole put the pulg back in and your good to go! drain plug is 15/16"

I oil fill plug is on top of the transmission. There is one under one of the shifter cables. The fill level is one the side of the transmission. You can fill it with the one on the side of the transmission but it is much easier with the one on the top.

UMM sorry buddy but you are incorrect! The fill is on the SIDE!
The top bolt if you'll notice has a small ball bearing on the end. The ball rides on one of the shafts in the tranny. The other switch is the reverse switch. It also has a ball and rides on a rail. Can you fill from the top? Possibly, but the side is easier and proper.

No the fill is on the top as with all gear boxes, you remove the level plug and fill it untill it starts to come out. There are numerous spots you can fill the trans from the top. Pull the black vent plug out and you can fill it there also. It is just easier to get at the one under the shifter cable and it will not hurt a thing.

Hey, quick question. If you're supposed to fill the transmission oil to the level of the fill plug only, how come when I removed the plug, oil came pouring out? Maybe 4-8 ounces worth. This is the first time I've done any transmission work on this car. Also, I have the front of the car jacked up (in other words, not sitting level) so I'm sure even more would be spewing out if sitting level. I don't know what kind of work was done on the car before I bought it. I bought it at 37k miles. Does anybody think it would've come from the manufacturing plant like this? Or could this be the work of a previous owner? I mean, afterall, you're only supposed to fill to the level of the fill plug, right? And how bad might this be for my car? Thoughts?

Because most people fill the car jacked up making the tranny angle a bit filling it more. When you drain it most people don't jack it up making that extra come out the minute you remove the plug. There is also the possibility that the person that put it before may have done it at a different jack height making the angle more or less.

Just a quick tip: I'm about to do the same thing and I found these plastic fill spickets or whatever at walmart for like 99 cents that screw onto the bottle of the tranny fluid. you can move the bottle to weird angles to position it, then adjust the spicket and the fluid flows, thereby (theroretically) reducing spillage of that nasty (and expensive) tranny oil...
