Intake Manifold Condition

I just removed the head from my 1g GSX, working towards replacing damaged valves, and noticed that my intake manifold has a lot of buildup on the inside. I'm planning to clean it, but wanted to know if this is reasonable for a 1g turbo with 162k?

Hard to tell from just the one pic, but yeah, they all get really nasty inside.

EGR does a number to the intake manifold. Especially at that high of milage. Mix that with a loose engine with blow-by = one nasty intake manifold. Soak that sucker is some gas.

I just flushed the intercooler and no noticeable amount of oil came out, so I'd agree that EGR seems like the culprit. This one will get cleaned before its back on the head.

That is pretty normal. Just block the egr valve. You can blast a lot of the gunk out at the car wash.

spray a lot of engine degreaser in it. let it soak for a bit. and rinse with a power washer then repeat if neccesary

That's my plan. Shouldn't be too difficult.

Just block the egr valve.

The class I'm in for Rallycross requires all factory emissions equipment to be present and functional, so that's not an option for me. I guess the intake will just get coated over again eventually.
