420A: 1995 Eclipse Keeps Dying

A month or two ago the car wouldn't start. It'd turn over for a while but wouldn't ignite at all. I'd let it sit for a few minutes and then it'd start right up.

Now the car tries to die while driving all the time. If I have my foot pressed on the gas it'll just hiccup pretty bad but continue to run.

I replaced the fuel pump about a month ago but I'm having the same problems.

I've narrowed it down to cam or crank position sensor, coolant temp sensor, or possibly fuel relay?

I'm far away from my dad's shop (Where all my tools are) so I can't just pull and test sensors.

Any suggestions? Anyone else have this problem?

check your map sensor, vacuum lines and pcv valve. i had that same problem on my old eclipse but i sold it before i fixed it. do you have any cel codes?

I did have codes. About 5 or 6. One of which was the "cam/crank pos sensor".
I fixed a bad connection where someone replaced the cam sensor.

Okay so I went to AutoZone and while I was looking under the hood I found a small hole in a vacuum line on the back of the engine, up high. I just replaced it and the engine ran a lot smoother but I still don't think that is what is causing it to shut off.

If it is still throwing codes than address them. The diagnostic system is there for a reason.

What codes is it throwing? Also Usually want to start out with cheapest. start cam sensor, crank sensor or coil pack. But if its a 420a best chance is cam sensor. I had same prob and thats what it turned out to be. My cam sensor had cracked on the inside so oil was getting into the connection itself and causing it to coat the inside of the connector with oil.

Man vacuum lines can play hell on the ECM fuel delivery... I cut one of mine on accident and couldn't figure it out for the life of me. Found out where the sucking noise was coming from in my cabin... put a connector on and it ran like new!

Have you tried to replace the fuel filter. I had the same issue a little while ago and I figured I would start with the fuel filter since its cheap and easy to replace. So I replaced the fuel filter and it fixed all my issues and never had a problem since. If you have not replaced the filter you have to remove the battery and the windshield washer fluid reservoir. After you remove both of them the fuel filter will be sitting right in front of you, you cant miss it. I hope this helps you with your problems. Good Luck.

U can get one at pretty much at any parts store. I purchased mine at autozone. It ran me 25 dollars.

Alright since I fixed a small vacuum leak the car was running better until today where it died several times and took forever to start. I don't think I can jack the car up high enough to reach the crank pos sensor though :/ Im using the mitsubishi jack.
