I was driving today and noticed that my tempurature gauge was really high and my car was almost overheating. I stop to look at stuff and i noticed that my cooling fan was not running. My ac fan works fine. what could be causing my fan to not run? I checked the fuse but it looked fine.

Check the relay if the car has one if not unhook the fan and try and power it from a battery or external source to see if it is working.

i checked it and it looks like all the rest of them so im assuming its good

ok how can i test to see if the fan works?

and do you just unplug the ect or should you screw the sensor out of the housing and test with it still connected to the wire?

Assuming you have the original fans, test the passenger side fan (radiator fan) by unplugging it. Use at least 20 gauge wires for the following. On the fan side of the connector connect the black and yellow wires to ground. Now touch +12v to the blue wire - fan should go on medium speed. Now connect the blue and green wires together and then touch +12v to both - fan should go on high speed.

Just unplug the ect and test it with engine cold and then hot as described in the link in post #6.

And retest that 30A "RAD FAN" fuse with it pulled out and checked on an ohmmeter or in series with a light bulb. You can't always tell it's good by just looking.

That connector for the fans is known for developing a short..I bypassed that connector and hardwired my fans...

ok thanks guys i will try all that in the morning

and how do you test the sensor? I tried earlier but i could get the probes into the back of the sensor due to not having room

ok so i checked the fan and it works fine. also i replaced the ect sensor but that didnt fix it

I have a radiator fan switch coming to the parts store is there anything else it might be?

Fan relay, ECU, fuse, or wiring.

This may be beyond your ability but you really need to try grounding the green-orange wire under 1 of 2 fan relays in the engine fusebox (with relays in place and then key on, engine not started). Use relay in bottom row 2nd from right or the 5th from right. This is what the ECU does, so this will tell you if the relay (or fuse) is bad. (You could instead ground ECU pin 20 which is the same wire if you wish). If the fan operates then the ECU is not turning them on. Keep in mind the ECU only turns them on when coolant is too hot.
Of course to get at the relay wire you'll probably have to unbolt the engine fusebox - disconnect battery negative before doing this.

ok i think its fixed i messed around with the relays and then decided to try it again. once the engine got to temperature the fan kicked one. I took it for a drive and it stayed at normal temp until i hit a bump then it went up a little ways. So one of the relays must be loose or faulty.

All the fan relays are the same so you can also try swapping them. The passenger side fan is controlled by the 3rd and 5th relay from the right (count relay sockets), bottom row of engine fusebox. One on gives medium speed, both on gives high speed. So you can swap with other fan relays. You can also force ECU to turn fans on by unplugging the ECT sensor and shorting (jumpering) its harness connector pins with engine running (maybe even with just key on and engine stopped too).

eagle talon 96:
I changed the coolant sensor and the fans so i know they work but only the drive side will come on and ive checked the fuse and they are good i changed the thermostat as well. both fans came on when i plunged them on the left side but not on the passenger side. my car over heats and i don't know what is wrong with it

it use to come on when it got to a certain temp. and when i unplugged it for the coolant sensor it would cut on the second i did it. but it would over heat because my driver side fan was burned out so i got a new one. and the day i installed it they worked but then the passenger side stopped coming on and now i drive for 20min and it will over heat i even tuned the ac on and it wouldn't cut on i even switched the fans to make sure it was them and the passenger side still didnt come on. i know for sure both fans work. please help i went to autozone and they didnt know that to do

Cut one wire on one side of the connector, cut the adjacent wire in the other connector and solder them together.. Do them one at a time and don't forget to slide shrinkwrap on one side..
