If you put a 3 inch down pipe on your 4G63 motor, then you may notice that in order to do a simple oil change you have to unbolt the down pipe. Some down pipe / O2 housing combinations make this task VERY difficult. Your options are usually not very easy. You can swap oil filter housing which requires you removing the timing belt cover. You can install oil filter relocation kit which can cost up to $150.
Or you can remove your down pipe every time you do an oil change

Then I got a hold of a DSM with an oil filter I've never seen before. I was able to remove the oil filter without removing down pipe using the OEM factory (water cooled) oil filter housing. I was shocked. So I went to the auto parts store and got the exact same filter and it went on JUST as easy as it came off. I was shocked. How has then gone unknown for SO long?

The secret part is CARQUEST Oil Filter. Part number 84092

DO NOT GET THE ONE THEY RECOMMEND (unless the recommend this part).

Again thats:

Um sorry bud but there are others out there that fit these "tight" areas. Two examples are the Pennzoil PZ-37 and PZ-109 (I used to work at an oil change spot) :D

I also used a "large" 6 bolt oil filter (one of the fat ones) with my 7 bolt with 3" dp 2g and it also bolted up with no problems.

Which oil filter were you using to begin with?

A lot of oil filters have the same thread, however some do not. The smaller oil filters restrict some of the higher oil pressure. My balance shafts were eliminated and i wasnt to worried about a smaller oil filter. I have so much oil pressure it blows past the cam angle sensor seal. i changed the seal once, i wonder if i just have the wrong seal, or maybe its the oil pressure.

No idea what you're talking about.

I've never had to remove my downpipe on either my talon or my laser. each were 3" downpipes.

I used K&N / Bosch / OEM filters on my Talon and never had an issue.

On my laser I've just used Bosch filters, just reach straight up, twist it off by hand, get the new one, pop it on, tighten and go.

I use a oil filter for a honda/acura. Mobil 1 m1-104 oil filter clears the 3in downpipe too its fatter and shorter.

I use a 3000 GT VR4 filter available locally as a Napa FIL 7092. It's short and fat.

Thats the same filter I been using for a few yrs now. I believe it lists for an evo also. Theres a whole thread about this, thats where I found it. Napa sells two lines theres the proselect which is 27092 and the gold which is 7092.

I've never had issues either and in on the stock housing with a 3" pipe. I've used Fram, Mobil 1, auto zone, and napa oil filters without issues. Also it's the filter made for a 2 g if that matters for you.

I have 3 inch downpipe and i have so much clearance i can grab the filter from the top or bottom super easy, but now im wondering what kind of weird 3inch setup you got thats so much of a PITA????

I've never had to remove my downpipe to replace the oil filter either. I read the op and immediately wondered what kind of filter you had been using because I've never had to do that with various different brand filters.

Two oil filters are commonly used with 3in downpipes. either the evo oil filter, which as said is half the length the normal dsm filter. Or the standard miata oil filter which is slightly smaller than the stock and has the same threading and diameter.

the thing to remember is that a smaller filter will more quickly get clogged with contaminates and can hold less particulate manner. so use good oil and DONT CHEAP OUT ON THE FILTER.
