Test logs

Attempted a few quick 3rd 4th gear pulls today on my way home from work..

In all honesty, the quality/length of these logs suck..
Everytime that I thought I had a nice open stretch of road in which to get into it,
something would catch my eye and cause me to get out of it really quick.

First pull, starting knocking as soon as boost came up..
I looked down and saw the knock guage shooting up,
so I got out of it, and looked over what little bit of a log that I was able to actually get.

Code:

Time RPM's TMA Airflow TPS O2

2.23 4312 30 2.78 11.79 0.8
3.35 4356 34 4.76 31.43 0.08
4.47 4980 16 22.62 100.2 0.9
5.59 5588 8 28.23 100.2 0.92
6.7 6132 9 30.69 100.2 0.9
7.81 4624 35 15.25 100.2 0.92
8.92 4700 6 24.69 100.2 0.92
10.05 3584 35 1.41 5.11 0.32

Another quick pull, this time I added 3% from
4k and up to a total of +13% across on the S-Afc.
Not that I'm relying on the NB O2 for any sort of accuracy,
but it seems that the car has always liked to run better
on the fat side. Anything below .92v and I see some pretty
substantial timing being pulled.

Code:

Time RPM's TMA Airflow TPS O2

211.01 4480 34 5.48 24.75 0.02
212.11 5036 29 9.89 32.22 0.92
213.23 6376 15 32.8 100.2 0.9
214.34 7300 12 32.31 100.2 0.9
215.47 5216 38 6.36 100.2 0.94
216.57 5764 7 28.71 100.2 0.92
217.7 6240 10 30.5 100.2 0.9
218.81 4792 12 31.03 5.11 0.84
219.93 5024 14 27.44 100.2 0.9
221.06 4624 8 26.97 100.2 0.92
222.18 3880 34 2.88 14.54 0.8
Another higher rpm 3rd gear roll. I wanted to to a full
4th gear pull, but there were a couple of cars around,
and I don't like to go all out on the area that I was in.
The car felt a bit better, although the knock guage was
still coming up pretty well.

Added another 2% across and made a quick blast from
mid 3rd.
I really need to either get to the dyno (lack of funds)
or find a nice open stretch where I can run the car thru the gears..
This 'pick and open spot on the freeway when there are no cars' crap
is for the birds..

Code:

Time RPM's TMA Airflow TPS O2

8.94 4252 26 6.95 28.29 0.16
10.07 5628 29 8.1 27.5 0.8
11.17 6084 15 34.08 100.2 0.4
12.29 5924 13 24.91 100.2 0.92
13.4 6904 13 30.66 100.2 0.92
14.52 5084 15 3.15 100.2 0.94
15.64 5540 9 26.34 100.2 0.92
16.75 5244 36 1.49 5.11 0.32
Pertinent mods are in my profile, but a quick and dirty;
eprom ecu w/ DSMChips stage III chip, Big 16G, supporting
mods, 650's, Aeromotive FPR, MkIV w/ rewire, FP @ 43psi, boost at 18psi on 93 pump.

Log only rpm, timing and o2. Make sure you go WOT no later than 2500rpms. Post up the results.

You really need to get your samples/second up higher on your logger. It's almost impossible to see what's going in when you only have 5 data points

I normally do my logging on the expressway, around midnight on a weekday. Just down the expressway first, where you plan to make the pull just to make sure there aren't an cops sitting there.

Also, you can drop TPS from the log since we know that is functioning normally.

Thanks for the tips you guys, I definitely appreciate it.

In all honesty, the main reason that I even posted those was to make sure that they would look right, and since Jeff @ DSMChips has been working with me on some new timing maps, I wanted him to see the specific area that the car was knocking in.

The weather has been super crappy, so I haven't even been able to get into it too much.

Thanks again for the input guys! Noted and will take it for action.

Now for the ugly... Something let go on the bottom end.
I had just gotten off the freeway and was getting ready to stop,
make some adjustments and make another pass. As I accelerated
from the light, I heard a very intermittent 'knocking' coming
from the motor. This 'knocking' was not present at all during the run, as
you could definitely feel it reverberate thru the car when it was doing it.
Luckily, I was only a few blocks from the house,
so I limped it home and poked around some to isolate the problem.

It's definitely the bottom end, although I haven't made an exact
determination as to the problem. I never lost oil pressure, nor was
there any fluctuation. The oil looks fine; pulled the VC and inspected
the valvetrain with no ill findings. Timing marks are dead on, and the plugs
look great, taking into account the amount of timing that was being pulled.
(EGT's peaked out at about 890c in 3rd and 4th, and the car wasn't knocking all that much as indicated
on the knock sum guage. 7~10 counts est.)
Compression is dead nuts on 175 across the board, and everything else
that I could think to look at on the top half of the motor looks great.

Whenever I manage to get the spare time, I'm going to drop the pan and
take it from there. Again, it was VERY intermittent, but I didn't drive for too
much longer after I heard the initial noise; 2 minutes tops.
At idle she purred like a kitten. More details to come..

That new log looks pretty lean, but anyways that really doesn't matter now.

Best of luck with the problem.
