Hey guys, I've got a question for you all. If I were to start a tuning shop in the KC area that had decent pricing, dynos, modifcations and so on would you go there? I'm thinking of starting my own garage/tuning shop and wanted to know if I'd get the support of DSMers and any other car from the KC area - although right now my specialty would be DSMs as that's all I've worked on so far.

I plan to get all the certification needed but not charge nearly as much as others due to probably having a teaching job and what not so it'd be a "side job." But anyways what are your opinions? Again I'd be, starting out, heavily geared towards tuning DSMs, and also have a AWD Dyno. :D

Let me know what you guys think!

Maybe a full garage/dyno is a bit much... I may settle with just a home garage with the necessary tools to do a quality job but lack a dyno...

Seems the DSM community has died in KC, bad idea imo. You also have various well known shops that you will be competing against.

Not really a good idea to be a "jack of all trades" if you have a teaching job, stick with that. I wouldn't have anyone fix my car as a "side job". Specialization, or I feel you might be pissing up stream.

Yeah I figured as much. Well it depends on the side job though, you can still specialize and have another job. It's no different than having additional duties at work, I mean I work on one of the three test stations I work on for the USAF, but I can "specialize" in the other two as well as long as I continuously work on them and keep the knowledge fresh I can still properly work on them. But again it was just a thought... I probably won't do it anyway - like everyone said there's not enough here to do so. (noted from a group on facebook)

well don't stop.b/c ppl say not a good idea. there is alot of dsm in my area but they all don't kno any body. i'd like to see dsm blow up in kc. so take a risk and trust yourself. i'd help you bro.

My dad and a couple of friends actually keep bouncing this idea around. The old Goodyear on 95th and Metcalf looks prime. We werent thinking of it being all DSM's though. We were thinking of just opening a general performance shop further south. Most shops including MCRacing and Modified are further north. We were thinking of opening one in like the Overland Park area, and get all these more wealthy kids. Now we wouldnt have a dyno or anything at first but later down the road yes. We have a fab guy that went to Wyotech interested in this and two ASI certified mechanics as well. Also have a lube and tire guy. Basically start out doing simple stuff like exhaust work, installing intakes, installing lowering kits, HID's etc. etc. We also wanted to have a place big enough to store parts so we could have some stuff on hand or if not order it for customers.

So now we need a business loan and a shop. LOL :)

If only I were stateside back there, I'd definitely be in and help you guys out. But yeah, if/when you guys do get it up and going I'll be sure to recommend my friends to you. ;)

In Wichita here we have a place called fusionworks, basically all imports but he is a good tuner and alot of people trust him, he does not have a dyno but he uses Wichita dynos dyno to tune here just give him a share of it. If you could do that and get the knowledge of the right tuning ect of how it works I would think it would work!
