I'm debating on joining the Marines still, and I'm just looking for some insight on the whole thing. I feel like Ohio State is not enough in life and I want to serve. I qualify to become an officer and was just curious to get another persons point of view, instead of my OSO (no disrespect towards him). Specifically, I'm curious what happens during PLC in my freshman and sophmore summers? What was it like? I'm aware that my junior and senior years will be the toughest. I am set on the Marines, and am not interested in any other branch. Any other info or ideas would be great. Thank you.

Edit: And another question. Is my job assigned to me or do I choose what I want to do?

Shit. Army Specialist soon to be Warrant officer right here.

Just so you understand something that NO recruiter will tell you. If you sign up. Even if you do a short term. You are under contract INDEFINITELY as an officer to the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR). Every single recruiter will tell you that the IRR never activates people or that it is "low risk" or "low probability" I assure you this is not the case.

The IRR has been recalling people like CRAZY, including officers, to make up for numbers that are needed to deploy units. My whole section in the 142nd MI Bn was all made up of IRR recallees including the Officer in Charge (OIC). There was a man that got out during Operation: Desert Storm and HE got recalled and served with us in Afghanistan.... He was 63.

Yep, once you're a military office, you will always be a military officer.

And I have no problem with that.

That's good. I personally don't either, and I plan on commissioning in the Air Force.

Best thing for you to do is try to get into contact with a Marine and ask them about their experience. Don't try to find out from recruiters because they like to lie their asses off. If you know what you want to do as a Marine try to find someone in the field and talk to them, or several of them.

That's why I posted on here. All of my buddies are Enlisted Marines.

See everyone one of us said that. I actually didn't care and even though my life was ROYAL screwed up when I came back it, it was my company not the Army that did that.

However, there was a Staff Sergeant that was recalled. He had just opened a restaurant in the last 3 years. It was successful. When he left, no one was able to manage the business the way he did and the business struggled. Towards the end of the deployment he mentioned that he was going to file for bankruptcy. Another person, like myself, had a lucrative career in the IT field. His pay went from $75,000+ to $23,000 as a Specialist LITERALLY overnight for 400 days.

You are literally locking your future, until you are 65 years of age, to the military. It doesn't matter if your activation will cause the loss of your house, your business, etc. You are locked in.

Understood.

And thanks for your input, laserspeeddemon.

in the marines.... dude make sure its what you want and all you want.. youve gotta have passion to do it and never let it die becuase its damn hard in recruit training and then after its just a bunch of bullshit a lot of times. ive been in for a year. don't get me wrong, i love that i am a marine, and i love the marine corps, but some days i just wish i had looked my options... anyway, make sure its for you man, dont jump into anything just because a recruiter makes it sound good. if you don't get the job you want primarily, don't fall into the lies, just simply walk out. give it a good thinking about man, best of luck to you whatever you do.

I dont know why an officer of any sort would own a DSM. They make 3k a month starting. My platoon leader has a Nismo Edition 370z. And he's been in the army for like 2 months.

And Ill be the first to tell you that the military isnt all its cracked up to be.

Thank you for your input. I'm the one who actually contacted my OSO. He contacted all OSU freshman via email about the program months ago, and I simply ignored it, but didn't delete it. It's not like he was knocking on my door blowing up my phone. I've been thinking about the Marines for the past 2 years. I have about 5 buddies right now that are Marines, and several more that haven't left for Parris Island yet. The only contact I've had with the Columbus, OH office was to make sure I qualified, and it was just with a Gunnery Sgt, wish I could remember his name. I have yet to have my face to face meeting with my OSO so our only contact so far has been through email which was to ask about my ACT scores and my current year of school.

I believe it is something I want to do, also. Being at school and all, it ain't enough. I want to serve my country. I have been lifting for a year now, just gotta get my cardio up!

And Ill be the first to tell you that the military isnt all its cracked up to be.

Could you add some support with that statement?

I agree that it wasn't all that great. That is my own opionion though

I signed when I was 17 and did spit training. First I was told that I couldn't do the MOS I wanted because it was an active duty job to later (years) find out it WAS available for reserves. The recruiter lied to me and you hold no value to anyone. You are just another bullet in the chamber ready to be shot out and forgotten. I was also not a fan of changing who I was and conforming to what they wanted me to be. It'll freck up your mind.

If it's something you really want to do then do it. Everyone has their own opinions on it and not all are positive. Just make sure you really think about it before signing anything.

The military is all about having people conform to their standards and changing who you are. Why would you join the military and expect anything different? It is a proffessional setting, not high school.

Absolutly I can add on to what I said. I've been in for almost 4 years and when you first leave you will think you'll be totally Hooah. You will love every idea about being in the military. But 2 deployments later you will regret it because they add about 20 years onto your body aging wise for every year your over seas. About the time you arrive to your regular unit you will be asking yourself, "Why in the hell did I do this?". Its all great and good that you think you owe your country. But by being a good civilian, your making the world a better place. The military is so unorganized and half of the time you will not know anything about whats going on. Especially as an officer. I 100% look forward to my ETS date and will never look back. You can be a patriot and theres nothing wrong with that. Im just telling you from the inside view.

And if you need conformation of anything I just said, ask anyone in this thread.http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/hangout/361092-anyone-military.html

some backup on dsmkings post about it not being what its all cracked up to be... i wanted to go to school for criminal justice, but didnt have money for it, and i really thought the marine corps was for me so i decided hey ufck school i'll go when i get back.. i talked to my recruiter(s) about it and they all said school'd be paid for if i went reserves. little did i know i'd have to do my 6yrs first... they never told me that. it wasn't until AFTER recruit training, mct, and motor t mech school that they told me oh you have to wait til you finish your 6 yrs then you get the g.i. bill... SOOOooo that ufcked up my whole process of going to school... also king's right about not ever knowing ANYTHING until it happens and then everyone is confused. they go on theyre own time and nobody but themselves (higher ups) matter. i had an unfathomable amount of respect, and gratituity to our nations military and then i joined.... needlesstosay i have lost a lot of that. like i said before man... make. sure. its. what. you. want.. dont get fooled by their lies man..

"Its all great and good that you think you owe your country. But by being a good civilian, your making the world a better place" +1 man.

in theory, you pick your job. but what reality what happens is you say what you want, they'll either reply with okay here, or no its full. if its not what you want, dont take it. you dont want to end up getting ishtted on ### you have a job you hate...

honestly i dont know what plc is i didnt go officer. but i gave you all i had man if you have other questions feel free to ask

You choose the job you want to an extent. You picks several jobs that you would like to do and they give you the one that is open. If you have a Open General in your list of jobs they will put you wherever the hell they want. At least that's how it works for enlisted. Not sure about officers.

Like I said dude. You need to find a Marine officer and talk to him about it.

I'm an officer in the Air Force and I love my DSM!

For the second time, that's why I posted on here... to find a Marine Officer.

Thanks man I appreciate that!

I thi k you are looking the the wrong place then for your information. Why not try and find your local base and se an appt with someone to talk that isnt a recruiter.

Remember dude, you are posting online about a subject, not everyone is going to giv an answer you want.

Oh and I didnt mind I had to take out my 15 piercings each month it was the fact they mentally and emotionally changed who I was. I could already follow orders if need be it's how they do it and the fact I was completely miserable being enlisted. Perhaps I was just too young and still had a lot more of my life I wanted to live before doing that.
