I was joking with a couple friends of mine before that I was going to paint my Talon with Plastidip. After thinking about it, I really decided to give it a try. Plastidip was the same thing I used for the center section of the bumper on my 2008 Lancer and it has held up remarkably well. No chips or anything. So here it is, still in progress since I have yet to complete the front end conversion but...I like it so far.

Fender and bumper still drying

Not too sure what exactly Plastidip is, but I like it so far!

I was not using brush on...I was spraying it. I am going for a stealth type look. I need to get a new center tail light since I broke mine, but that will be smoked out too. Headlights and corners will probably be smoked as well.

I am trying to decide whether I want to do the wheels or not. It looks good with the silver but I think it would look mean being the same as the car now.

I actually like that... a lot. I have a 1ga center section if you need one.

that looks great man how much you want to do my car? haha keep up the good work.

Bring it over here to WA and we can work something out :hellyeah:

Looks really good!

details on how you did it, please!

It's pretty much like any other paint job. I scuffed everything with a coarse steel wool pad and I did this wet...like wet sanding. Taped and plastic everything I didn't want to get the paint on (like the windows)....then take your time and spray it.

This stuff DOES NOT run. It dries evenly and smoothly. No sags, orange peel, etc. Just look at how it turned out on mine.

What's the difference between plastidipped and matte black? Is it basically the same just the way it's painted on?

Plastidip is a rubberized paint. It's used to coat tools to add a grip to it, but it can be used for many things. It's durable, flexible, etc. It's been holding up great on my Lancer's front end. Matte black is just that...a flat black paint. You can still get runs, uneven coating, orange peel, etc. With plastidip, once the solvents evaporate, you're just left with a smooth even coat.

I'm sold:D I definitely like the look and if it's that easy....:hmm: Thanks for sharing your experience with plastidip with us tsi1991awd:thumb:

so does your car feel smooth? Rubbery ? Is it scratching easy? What if it gets tore and a air bubblegets in there, it's gonna peel? How many coats did it take? The more questiobs I ask the more I'm wanting to do this LOL, give me permission

Hey no problem brother, that's what this community is all about. Here it is on my Lancer, still holding up as good as the day I did it:

It is smooth and kind of rubbery at the same time. It can hold up to rocks and all that with no problem. There's no chance of it getting an air bubble in it. If it scratches or tears, just spray more over the top...it pretty much melts the section that is torn and reforms itself. You will be able to tell a little bit that it was messed up there but not a big deal.

You can do a couple thick coats.....annnnnd, sure go ahead and do your car and post the results :thumb:

Did you have to prep with any sort of etching primer? Also, where can you buy the spray? I didn't know there was an aerosol version.

I wanted to use plastidip to coat my bumper cover grill used for protecting the fmic. Paint annoyingly chips off over time from impacts with bugs and rocks.

jeeze I just ran up the hall at work to show my girlfriend how amazing it turned out , I fill like a kid that just got a power ranger toy for christmas, good work guy!! Defitentaly lose the silver wheels, go all stealth

I think we are goin to see alot of plastidipped loving people bcuz of you LOL

No, just scuff the surface so it adheres. You could use primer if you want, but this stuff is made to go on any surface just as it is (permitting the surface is CLEAN). You can buy them at Ace Hardware...and someone said Home Depot but I never saw it there. I bought cans locally for my Lancer but for this job, I bought them online from Ace Hardware Outlet...cheapest place I found it AND shipping wasn't that bad. It came out about 20 bucks cheaper including shipping than if I bought them all locally.

So how much did this cost you? Did you have to use primer at all? I might honestly just weld in sheet metal over my rust holes and respray the whole car in Plasti Dip red.

Is this what you used in spray cans in black?
Plasti Dip Protective Coating Products | Synthetic Rubber Dip Coating
If so how many cans did you use on your whole car?

Thanks again:)

That's the stuff bro. Aerosol can, black. I haven't tried any of the other colors. I used 10 cans total...every bit of 10 cans. This was applying medium to thick coats. They changed their can design. It used to have a red tiny nozzle and that worked better for me honestly. The new cans have the nozzle like Duplicolor uses now...the big fat white nozzle that supposed to relieve finger fatigue....I had some issues with it but I worked through it. Red nozzle is WAY BETTER if you can find them!

LOL That's funny man....I'm surprised actually that Plastidip hasn't been talked about on here yet.

Ace Hardware is where I got mine for the Lancer. These 10 cans I bought online from Ace Hardware Outlet. Cheapest I have found and even with the shipping, it cost less than it does locally. Go figure.

Yea that's a far drive. If I had a garage that wasn't packed I would do that in a hart beat. It sucks living with my parents still!

Motivation to clean the garage bro :thumb:

With the tape, plastic and steel wool....about $90. Still have to get foam tape to put the moldings back on but that shouldn't be more than a few bucks.
