Well I have been looking for a good dependable daily driver for a few weeks now, I ran across a 98 s10 2.2 112k miles, are these good engines? Thanks.

my buddies got one and he beats the piss out of it and the only problem he had was he had to replace his trans LOL but the engine is fine but like i said he beats the piss out of it so as long as you dont drive it like he does your good to go good little trucks imo

Depends on how it was taken care of. This kind of question is completely subjective and the answers mean nothing.

In my experience they have been good overall trucks but everyone I know that has ever owned one has regretted not getting one with 4wd.

The plain and simple truth is that these trucks have tremendous weight shift issues and have a hard time catching traction while turning with even mild acceleration, I've never experienced anything like it. Generally it isn't all that bad on dry roads but a little bit of rain or snow will have you going nowhere and looking silly while you do it. Of course if its 4wd then you simply push the button and drive when things get a little slick or you know you need to make quick time to get through the intersection.

My sister has a 98 s10 with 2.2. Its the same engine thats in a cavalier, its a turd and doesn't get good gas mileage for a 4 cylinder. No 4wd either. Other than that is 175,000 on the clock.

Not sure if the 01s were the same motor/truck, but my bro has one. Very underpowered to say the least. Working on them is relatively easy. Except to replace the oil-pan gasket you have to pull the motor... Never really had any big problems with it so far.

One of my buddies has one also and we used to deliver TVs with it. I remember we had this really old big-ass TV with the wood trim all attached and everything and it was roped to the bed. We were going down hill trying to stop and the weight from the TV just pushed the truck down. We smoked the brakes trying to get this thing to stop in time, and we werent even going that fast.

In short... underpowered, a little too light weight for my likes, and pretty small. But not too bad.

It's a pretty good engine and is easy to work on. It doesn't have much power, but with a decent tune up it is capable of getting good gas mileage. If the price is right I'd say it would be a decent dd. My dad has a 94 with 180k on the motor with nothing done but tune ups. The body is rusted, but that motor just won't die. Matter of fact it still runs damn good.

I personally owned a 2000 S-10 with the 2.2 and can vouch that it was a reliable motor. I can also vouch for the fact that it sucked on gas mileage being a 4 cylinder. It was way underpowered for how heavy it was as well. I would reccomend it on reliability alone however. But it can be incredibly frustrating (if not scary) trying to accelerate onto the highway into traffic etc. I also work with a guy who has owned one of these for I dont know how long now, well over 130k miles and no major problems to speak of.

Oh, one other thing, it will SUCK at getting around in ANY amount of snow. You have to put about 250-300 lbs of sand in the bed to maintain any reasonable amount of traction and when you do this your mileage will suck even worse. (note to all those who suggested the 4WD--the s-10 was never offered in the 2.2 with 4WD. Those only came with the 4.3 Vortec V6. Another reliable motor from my experience but I only averaged 20mpg at BEST with that motor in the 2WD. Also, the 4WD models had some issue with burning through wheel bearings prematurely.
