Yeah, I've heard the hype, but a nurse recently told me: "Take your regular medicine for the flu and do the normal stuff you normally would, and you'll be fine."

So, basically, it was a "state of fear" for no reason. It's the flu, and it sucks. Although later "posters" may say different. We Shall See !!!

Edit: The Flu does suck :)

The doctor told me i either had mono swine or strep. it wasnt strep and wasnt mono. so im taking it it was H1N1. its definately not as bad as its made up to be. really high fever and felt like ass for a day. then started getting better. back to normal in 3 days? if that.

haha yeah, was pretty excited when i was good enough where the madre said i could drive the DSM, and hangout. woot woot.:rocks:

just the flu of the year (play on "flavor of the week").

yes its a different strain, but its the flu non-the-less, and it can be treated like the standard flu and it goes away!

Only dangerous for children and the elderly. 263 people in the United States since August already died from this strain of the flu and it will go up. Over 5,000 in the world so far this year have passed.

There are thousands of strains of the "flu" this is one of them. I personally believe for us to be hearing so much of it all of the sudden it has more to do with someone gaining from it than anything. Then poof what do you know we have a new vaccine we can't get enough of. You may think it's free but nothing is free. Oh yea don't forget to be against public healthcare otherwise you would have never been able to get this miracle vaccine that probably saved your life. :hmm:

My wife is an RN, and she is staying as far away from that "new" vaccine as possible. Mainly because they got it out on the market too soon. They have yet to see what the long term side effects (if any) are. Just another way for Uncle Sam and the media to put people in a frenzy. Y2K anyone? Bird Flu? Remember all those people running around in surgical mask?

If you can get it - it's not readily available for everyone, that's a myth. It's only going to be available in certain places starting off, because there isn't enough to go around. After talking to several doctors, your assumptions seem to be off base. I have a pregnant wife and a 2 year old daughter, which makes me very concerned. We're seeing more deaths in teens and younger people from H1N1 than with any other flu - it's quite different than other flu strains we've seen.

Don't write this off as a media induced panic people. Read up on the differences of H1N1 and the normal flu stats. I would pay close attention to deaths related to pneumonia and other secondary illnesses brought on by the flu this year. That's where H1N1 is doing the most damage.

They bring new flu vaccines to the market every year due to the changing strains. The H1N1 vaccine was brought to market in about the same time frame, if not longer than the normal process.

Not true. There have been more teen/young adult deaths reported due to H1N1 than any other flu strain so far. Many of those were healthy people too. Do more research folks. There's a reason companies are posting pandemic procedures for their employees to read. A lot of people who look past the media hype are pretty concerned.

A kid I play hockey with had it. He's 15 years old, 6' tall and built like a tank. He told me yesterday it knocked him on his ass and he couldn't get out of bed for 3 days. He's better almost 2 weeks later but it's still pretty scary. I'm glad my son isn't in school yet.

Its starting to get around the school systems here, the local universities and high schools are starting to get reported cases. I'm sure for certian people, yes it could be hard on them because they dont have a strong immune system, as for myself...i'll be alright. Just another type of flu, i've got more things to worry about.

CDC - Seasonal Influenza (Flu) - Weekly Report: Influenza Summary Update "99% of all subtyped influenza A viruses being reported to CDC were 2009 influenza A (H1N1) viruses." It's this years flu that's it. Does it behave slightly differently than last years? Of course. I do understand the concern for younger people and children as the fatality rate has shown to be higher for them this year. A recently published CDC study looked at 36 children who died of H1 N1 infection this spring and early summer. Two thirds had serious underlying disabilities such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy or long-standing respiratory problems.

While my gut reaction is it is just another flu, I am taking no chances for my 2 boys. They are both under 2 years old and thier doc is saying keep them away from sick people. So while I personally feel like it is hyped up flu I will heed the doctors warning! To answer the OP question, I have not had it and hope I never will!

I have never got a flu shot or plan on getting one this year. I'm not scared if I get sick I get sick but hasn't happend in a long time.

last year the company that I worked for gave out flu shots and i ddidn't get them and I was the only person that didn't get sick from the whole company.

Personally I think it all the radiation the ruskies dumped all over germany when I was living there in the 80's. So the only thing that can harm me are sties on my eye right now haha

It's definitely affecting those with weaker immune systems and disabilities more harshly, but many are wrongly assuming that younger healthy people don't have to worry about it. And from what I've read, that is completely wrong:
76 U.S. children dead of swine flu as cases rise - Swine flu

If we do get the vaccine, we'll do the shot and not the nasal spray.

Just got back from the doc's, I'm one of many confirmed Pig Flu cases in my area. All the nurses wore the little face masks while they took my vitals- it seemed like something from the movie "Outbreak".

My temp at 10:30 this morning was 104.0, the highest fever I've ever had in my life. This is the most immobilizing flu I've ever had- normally within two days I'm back out in the shop doing most anything but I literally cannot move.

I had it, and I have to say it was very nasty. I caught it early last month, and within 2 days I had Bronchitis. I went into the doc and they confirmed it was H1N1.

I recommend everyone in here get vaccinated that hasn't already caught it - it will save you a lot of trouble.

Haven't had H1N1 or any other flu for that fact for as long as I can remember. Also haven't had a flu shot in maybe 10 years or more. Did recive the H1N1 vaccine at my physical I had last week. DR thought it would be wise to get since I want to get in law enforcement.

From what I understand H1N1 has a particularly devastating effect on younger people who would not be normally a concern for death or permanent damage from a normal flu, this is because of the particularly strong immune reaction of young healthy individuals.

I think it is crazy for people to consider this "no big deal" this is literally a flu outbreak for which nearly no one has a resistance and if you have even a minimal background in epidemiology you will understand that this is a big deal in that it is impossible to effectively contain and has the potential to become a larger issue than it is. At the current moment this particular strain of flu is not particularly deadly, only temporarily incapacitating, but the idea of a "swine flu" in the abstract not the specific is worrying because swine can be infected by avian flu and human flu at which point they have a potential to become incubators for hybrid flus which can be capable of massive damage in the future because avian flu is very much a deadly flu. Swine flu becomes just one more pathway by which we can be infected by an entirely new payload for which we are entirely without defense. Whether or not there are a significant number of deaths involved (there is a higher mortality rate) there are further issues including the overwhelming nature of this illness which could cause considerable economic and social damages with the number of people out of the workforce at a given time and the stresses added by the costs of medical care during this (hopefully) minor crisis.

FWIW flu nomenclature isn't random. One section of a flu name is its infection pathway and the other is the payload type. As we have a new infection pathway then we can have issues with payload that can be incredibly damaging. It is speculated that the Spanish Flu started actually with farmers in the lower midwest infected by the pigs that they were raising.

Anyway, as soon as the flu vaccine is available in my area which should be soon then I will be getting it. If it wasn't available then I would be going around trying to find people with H1N1 and kissing them so that I could get it now instead of during finals.

My 7 year old 2nd cousin had this back ~4 months ago - powered right through like a good trooper.
