Well, here it goes. I started off by buying a 2g for dirt cheap hoping the transmission was good. I would drop the trans into my '91 and drive while I rebuild my failing trans. Plans changed as the 2g trans could not stay into 1st or 4th. So what do I do being a true DSMer? I take it into my own hands to rebuild the bastard. Of course, you say the first step to a successful rebuild is a nice clean and neat workspace right??? So, I cleaned off the ol' workbench:

Next step is disassembly correct??:

Guess I have a termite infestation? This has since been treated and the termites shall die out slowly. I guess the only good thing that came from this is now it will force me to clean every last part that will be in that trans!!! I will probably just get a bucket with some gasoline in it and dunk all the parts in. What a mess! BTW, I am going to move my workbench to a different corner of the basement!! Hope this doesn't happen to you during any of your rebuilds!! :talon:

Yuk. That's gross. I hate bugs. After I put my trans back in over the winter, I had yet to refill the trans fluid, so I left the fill plug open. Some left over fluid made a decent puddle over-night. For whatever reason, a handful of bugs and two worms migrated to it for some reason, then died in the puddle. LoL!

I clean everything up and no more bugs since. Ha!

To understand what temites do you have to understand what they are trying to accomplish. In the spring, termites swarm. The ones with wings leave their colony to set out and create new colonys. This was their attempt to leave the colony and start a new. Termites cannot live outside of a wet environment for extended periods of time due to the fact that they have no exoskeleton. Hence, the reason they create mud tunnels from the ground to wood up concrete and so on. It's to protect themselves. Simply (in my case), they left the colony(my main support beam), came into my basement (could not find a new dirt/mud for entry), swarmed around my flourescent light (above the torn down tranny), and started to die falling all over the transmission, also getting stuck in the wetness of the trans oil.

So, I understand what happened. I'm just pissed because I was being a neat freak about the trans in the first place and thought I was doing a good job keeping everything clean. And they go and dump all over the place.

My house was treated about 2 weeks ago. That's why the tranny is not done yet. That was just under a $1000 bill!

what did you use to clean the parts off?

Haven't yet. But I was thinking these basic tools: Bucket, Gasoline, and a Detail Paintbrush. Oh yea, and some rubber gloves of course.
