Hey guys, I was hoping someone could point me ni the direction of a nice, quality, reliable mountain bike. My season of racing (motocross) is coming to an end in 4 weeks or so, so I need something to up my training for the off-season.

My brother has a Blue SPECIALIZED bike that cost around $800, but I'm looking at something in the $300 range so we can train together this fall/winter.

If anyone has some suggestions, let me know! TIA...

I got my Diamond back response for 500 and its a great begginer bike. You could probably find a specialized hard rock around 300 but I'd try and get something with disc brakes.

I ride a moutain bike to work when the DSM is broke. I have no idea what it's called tho.

$300 won't get you too far. $500+ is in a price range for a decent MB. Also, it depends what kind of Riding your gonna be doing. Since you did Motocross im assuming Freeride or DH?
Anywho. $300 will get you a basic hardtail

Stick to a company like Specialized or Trek. A lot of the former reputable mtb names have been bought out by large companies like Wal-Mart, and subsequently have gone to shit. Mongoose, GT, etc. are all crap now. I used to race a Specialized Enduro FSR Pro, great bike, but not cheap. If you're looking for a good trainer, stick to a hardtail, a nice lightweight hardtail with a quality fork will do fine. Disc brakes are a big plus, you'll thank yourself the first time things get wet or muddy. Hydraulic or mechanical is up to you. Don't be fooled by flashy components like Shimano XTR, I ran a full XTR component set, and honestly I'd be hard pressed to find a difference between that and the LX and XT component lines. Look for a light frame, good fork, good brakes, and quality wheels. Check out www.mtbr.com for everything you need to know.

I just got a Gary Fisher Wahoo Disc. It was around 500. Its been great so far, but i've only had it alittle over a month.

Stop over Bike Line in Newark. I've seen great deals on used bikes on consignment from UofD students before. I picked up my first bike from Wooden Wheels for just over $400 and my Wife's Specialized for about the same, both were prior year models (should be clearing them out this time of year).
