Im going to go and look at a 95 gst hopefully (yeah i sold my gst and i want another one since gsx's are so god damn rare in georgia), it has a 120,000 miles on a "rebuilt motor." What is a good way to tell if it is a 6-bolt? The owner doesnt know and doesnt have any reciepts for the rebuild. He says the car was smoking, and he tried changing all of the cam and valve seals only to have a mechanic tell him that it was the turbo. He says since the turbo died he had bad compression and that was fixed along with getting a new timing belt. The owner says that a friend installed the turbo (t-25) and with no recpiepts i cant verify what was done. So any advice? I figure i'll take the car to a lube shop and get a $90 "diagnostic" run, test drive it, and run the car fax *edit* thought about a compression test but id need to find somewhere to do it for me. If i can talk him down the car is sold. But i really dont want a lemon, i want something that will run until i pay it off and decide to mod it :(.

So the engine was replaced when he had ownership of the car?
If it was and he doesn't know whether its a 6 or 7 bolt then it probaly is NOT.
Any shop (besides a DSM specific shop) wouldn't try to swap in a 6 bolt.
They would deal w/ the task at hand which is getting a new motor, not trying
to find a 6 bolt motor cause its less prone to the walk and then dealing w/ the
electrical issues that ensue w/ a 7-6 bolt swap. Most shops wouldn't think or know to do that
unless they are pretty DSM specific.

Also, he told you the cylinder compression was bad because it had a bad turbo???
That doesn't make sense if that was the case. I would not buy this car until you at
least do a compression test and if you can tell if the timing belt was done and all.
Even then I personally would'nt spend more then like 4,200 on that car if even that.
Unless Gst's are more expensive down there or something.

I say be patient and have it thoroughly inspected, otherwise you'll end up with a lemon. But then again if it turns out to be a real POS, then sell it to Krazywhiteboy...he doesn't test drive or inspect his cars before he buys them.
